Forgiveness

Rain hitting the window
Winds howling as the night went on
Dylan sat thinking of his mother
Thinking, as the death of his mother came on him
The reality that he was never going to see her again
He didn’t know how she died
And he just wanted to find out how she died
Not just a phone call saying she died

He decided to call his little brother Jim
Jim obviously didn’t get the news
Jim asked how she died
But Dylan didn’t have an answer
So they both agreed to go to their parent’s house

Dylan looked around
The rain had stopped
The winds had reduced to a light breeze
Police lights were lighting up the once quiet neighborhood
And all the police cars were at their parent’s house

He finally found his brother so he got out of his car and met up with him
Dylan met up with his brother and hugged him, he was happy to see him again

Dylan and Jim walked up to the old house
They explained who they were to the police
They just wanted to know what happened
The officer started explaining it
As the officer explained it, Dylan imagined it

The break in
His mom’s resistance
And the shot

It was an awful amount to take in
“Is my Mom still inside,” Jim asked?
“No, but your dad is somewhere inside”

Dylan and Jim went inside the house
Everything in the house seemed lifeless
As Dylan rounded every corner he remembered every moment with his mother
Dylan and Jim finally found their father in the dining room
Sitting alone with an expressionless look on his face

Dylan started to cry
He knew that his dad wanted to be there when it happened
And he wanted to be there too
There are so many memories in this room also
Dylan went over to the table to put his head down
Dylan was so overwhelmed

His dad calmly walked over
“Look I loved your mom very much”
“I wish that I was there when it happened”
“But it doesn’t mean that you think badly of yourself because of the mistakes you made”
“You guys made her life worth living and you should be happy and proud of that”
“She loved you guys very much”

Jim looked up first his dad’s words had got to him
But Dylan was still there sitting
“Look dad is right you should be happy and proud”

Dylan knew they were right
So Dylan got up and asked Jim if he wanted to go outside
Jim said yes so they went outside to talk to the police

As Dylan walked out he thought of his mother
And the last time he ever saw her was Thanksgiving dinner”
When all his relatives came over and celebrated

Jim asked if the police got the murderer
This snapped Dylan back into reality
“Yes, they have him at the police station”
“You may see him before he goes to trial”

Jim drove him and Dylan to the police station
Because Dylan started not feeling well
They finally met the murderer face to face

Dylan wanted to do so many things to this man but couldn’t
“Why did you kill my mother?” shouted Dylan.
“Why did you rob my parents?” Dylan asked.
“I am going to be happy when they lock you up forever! Dylan spat.

The man seemed sad
He told them why he did the robbery

His family needed money
His daughters were dying of hunger
He explained that you will do anything when your family dying
He was truly sorry for what he did
And before he was jailed he wanted their forgiveness

Dylan honestly believed the man and understood a little
He looked over to his little brother and knew they were thinking the same thing
The pain, suffering and sadness this man would go through

“I forgive you”

Dylan said goodbye to Jim and went home
Dylan went home safe in mind that forgiving the man was the right thing to do
His mother would have done the same

Two weeks later they found his mother’s will
In the will it contained a letter to Dylan, Jim, and Jeff, Dylan’s dad
It reminded them that she will always be reachable by prayer
It also said that she loved them very much
It also reminded him that you don’t know what you have until you lose it
