“It will feel brand new, I promise!” Dr. Charran said as her spectacles flickered over my purple pre-op markings. Twelve minutes later, a 23-year-old girl fled through the stiff ER doors. Red splattered blankets were strewn across her body. Executive decisions were made, scalpels were pushed, and the promised heart: used.
