Ballad
Born and raised in Montana State,
Leave he did, escape he did, he would not wait.
His mother cried, his father frowned,
But he could not be brought around.
Eager with anticipation, in bed he would lay,
Little did he know, what would happen the next day.
Graduation arrived,
He felt ‘twas a miracle he’d survived,
Excited, he jumped into the car and drove away,
Little did he know, what would happen the next day.
Fifty miles away from his college of choice,
He heard a bright, tender voice.
Looking ‘round, he saw her, the one who made everything okay,
Little did he know, what would happen the next day.
He introduced himself, and got down on one knee,
Startled, she started to flee,
But he caught her arm, and explained his tale,
Said there was something about her, something that made his heart flail.
Charmed, breathless, she didn’t know what to say,
Little did he know, what would happen the next day.
The next day,
While crossing the road, she spotted a penny, bent to grab it,
Right before the speeding car hit.
Tears in his eyes, the boy,
Raised in Montana State and surrounded by joy,
Dressed in black, and went the last fifty mile,
But never again did he smile.
