Safe...
“Jack, slow down” I pleaded with him. “We’ll make it on time. Please slow down” My foot moved against the floor as if I could slow down the car by pushing on the imaginary brake pedal.
He chuckled and smiled at me. “Would you relax?” I wish I could. “The wedding starts eight. We’ll be there in ten minutes.”
It was the fifth of June. Today was my brothers wedding. It was 7:40 p.m.
“If we’ll be there soon, could you please slow down a little.”
“Fine.” His foot eased off the gas pedal. I let myself breathe normally again.
We came to a stop light. The red light dragged on as few cars passed the intersection. The light changed. Jack started forward.
CRASH. A bright light. Shattering glass. Crunching metal. A jerk. Darkness…..
“SCARLET!!” a voice screamed but it sounded so distant. I was lost in a daze. “SCARLET!” it was a familiar voice. It was closer but I couldn’t quite grasp it. I felt a hand clasp mine. It was warm and sticky.
I tried opening my eyes. My eyelids felt heavy. I barley opened them. My vision was a blur. A figure stood over me. I couldn’t tell who it was. I saw a lighter figure appear next to the first. My eyes closed. I couldn’t keep them open. I felt sleepy. Like I was slowly falling asleep. A cold finger came to neck.
“She has a pulse. We need to get her out of here.” This was a woman’s voice.
“Will she be ok?” there it was. The familiar voice. Who was it? Why couldn’t I remember?
“She should be fine but we need to take her to hospital.” What was happening?
“Scarlet, Scarlet. Please say something” That familiar voice was still there. I lost conscience. The words echoing through my head. Say something. Say something…..
It was cold. I was in a bed somewhere. Somewhere. I heard a constant beep. I struggled to open my eyes. I cracked them open. Light. A bright light filled my eyes. It hurt. I wanted to close them. Let the darkness engulf me again. No. I had to know where I was. I let the light flood in and my eyes started to adjust. It was a small room. A white room. I turned my head to the right. There was a window. A window but no view. Blinds covered my only door to the world I knew. One I had been in before I lost consciousness. I saw screens. Lines crossed them. Red, blue, green. They moved with ever beep. Like mountains they peaked then dropped. I looked to my left. There was a familiar figure. He sat in a wooden chair against the wall. It faced me but he wasn’t looking at me. His head was in his hands. I starting remembering. sounds of things breaking. A voice calling to me. Say something…
“J-j-jack.” It was my own voice. So weak and quiet.
He looked up. His eyes were red and puffy. Was he crying? His eyes fixed on mine. He started smiling. Almost letting out a laugh.
“Scarlet” he laughed and walked over to me. He grabbed my hand. “ I thought I might have lost you.”
“What, what happened?” I couldn’t help stuttering. I felt so weak. I was confused. So much of what happened made no sense to me.
“ It’s ok now.” He smiled and his eyes showed compassion. I knew I was safe. I was safe with him.
