Fisherman
It was an ordinary morning in the Jones home. Everyone running down stairs in a chaotic fashion as they smelled the crisp of the smoke hanging down like a chandelier. On the table as there sat something golden and fluffy like the sun on the plate right in front of us ready to eat. Mom moved to our living room to sit on our couch where she sat and told me to come and talk to her. I came into our little living room where she sat at the armchair waiting for me to sit down at our dusty old couch that she had when she first moved in the house when my dad and mom got married.
How are you doing she asked. “Good” I said.
“Nick can we talk about how much time you spend on your devices; you spend half of your day on it like a person doing yoga in the park all day,” Mom said.
“No I don’t mom, I spend my time like a person doing yoga,”.
“Nick I think that you waste your time when you play on your devices,” Mom said.
“No I play a good amount of games and doing my homework and not just on my devices,” Nick said.
We heard a knock on the door my mom suddenly got up from the armchair she was sitting at where she was talking to me to see who was at the door. She told me that it was their old friend that they met before I was born. They have been friends for twenty years or so. He was a tall man and he had gray hair like a new silver coin that came just out of a factory. She told me his name was Mike Thomas. “You can come to my place to ice fish anytime you like Nick,” Mike said.
“Alright I will come back to talk more with you mom”.
“Nick I just watch you waste your time on your devices it takes over your life like a super villain takes over the world” Mom said
“NO mom!” I yelled.
“Nick it is not ok to scream at me,” Mom said as she raised her voice.
“I hate you mom you are the worst mother in the world,” I said angrily.
Nick stormed out the door mad like a tornado taking down a house. Rushing to his bike and to the garage where we keep our fishing rods, bait and tackle boxes. He took and stormed to the road where he would ride until he would find himself lost trying to find his parents friend they met before he was born. After a long three miles he finally made it to Mike Thomas house I found myself at his doorstep knocking to see if he would answer. After waiting for a few minutes he came to the door. “Hey come on in,” Mike said.
“Hey Mike can I can stay here for a few days,?” I asked.
“Sure come on in and I will be back to get you a blanket and pillow to sit on the couch while you wait,” Mike said.
He came back into the room with the blanket and pillow and told where I would be sleeping for the night was on the couch.
“You can stay here along as you want to Nick,” Mike said.
“ Thank you sir,” Nick said.
“ I need to go to my job where I go and ice fish for the fish hatchery that we have in town you are welcome to come along,” Mike said.
“Alright I will get my stuff,” Nick said.
“Ok lets go to my truck, we have to drive a little bit to the lake by my house,” Mike said.
We arrived at the lake where we would ice fish. Mike got his tackle box and fishing rod out of his old pickup truck. I got my tackle, bait and fishing rod out of his truck bed. Mike checked the ice to see if it was safe for us to go and walk on it. It was safe so we started to walk on the ice and we found a good place where we would set our stuff down and Mike got his auger and started a hole for him and me.
I sat there in my chair waiting for a fish to bite my hook that was down deep in the ice. I noticed something shining at the bottom of the water like a silver coin ready for someone to claim for themselves. I got up from his chair, he wanted to get the coin that was down in the water. The shining coin interested him as he walked a few feet not realizing that he fell through his hole. The water took him down like a raft takes you down a river on a rafting trip. The coldness of the water felt like a cold winter day. I felt a tug at my shoulder as Mike took me out of the water.
As I started to wake up I heard a voice call out to saying to me wake up. I was confused of who was talking to me. Then I remembered who it was talking to me it was my parents friend Mike Thomas.
He took me back to the house where I was still confused on what was happening. Then we got to his house. It was a strange looking house trying to remember what happened back at the lake where we were ice fishing.
We went back to the lake where I accidently fell through my fishing hole that Mike and I were fishing. We grabbed our stuff and put it back in the truck and drove back to the house where I stayed.
“Nick are you okay from falling in the hole?” Mike asked.
“ Yes sorry for falling,” I said.
“ Don’t be sorry Nick everyone makes mistakes,” Mike said.
“We are going to have supper soon Nick so go upstairs and get dry clothes and wash your hands,” Mike said.
I came down from the up stairs to come sit at the table where I was looking at the good food that was the table. The food had steam coming from it like the sun rays that come down to the earth. It was my favorite food that I have not eaten in a while since I stormed out the house.
We finished dinner then Mike headed to bed and told me that we had a go to the fish hatchery to drop off the fish we caught. So I walked to the couch where I would be sleeping for the night and I lied down and closed my eyes.
The next morning came and I woke up Mike was in the kitchen getting out the boxes of cereal for our breakfast so we could go to the fish hatchery to get the fish that Mike caught. He put the fish into a bucket and he put them in the back of his pickup so we could take them over.
We got in the truck and we drove off five miles to get to the hatchery. We finally arrived and got out and took the fish into the hatchery. One of the employees took it and put in one of the pools so it could swim.
“Hello Mike who is the young man that is with you ,?” Spencer asked.
“Hello Spencer this is Chris and Lisa Jones son,” Mike said.
“ I am going back to work see you guys later,” Spencer said.
Mike pick up the dirty bucket that the fish was in and we got back in the truck and went back to the house after a long trip back. He unlocked the door of the house and we went inside and sat at the couch and took a rest. He got up from the couch and went outside to get his stuff to clean them and he put them back into his garage. He came back into the house and he started to move towards the kitchen and got a frying pan out and he made something for lunch. I came to the table where I sat and ate the goodness of the grilled cheese melting while you eat it.
“Nick why did you come to my house and run away from your family?’ Mike asked in a calm voice.
“Mike because I got into the argument with my mom,” I said.
“I have known your parents for a long time I know you don’t hate your mom,” Mike said calmly.
“I am going to head to bed Nick don’t stay up to late we have a guest room that you can stay in,” Mike said.
“ I won’t stay up to late and thanks Mike for the talk,” I said.
I headed up the stairs with the blanket and pillow that he gave me the night before and walked up the stairs. I got up to the top of the stairs trying to find the guest room that he told me about where I could stay the night. I finally got to the room I put my gear down
and I laid them down in the bed. I closed my eyes and I was thinking to myself on what Mike had said to me at lunch maybe he is right. Maybe I will tell my mom sorry for yelling and telling her that I hate her, when I really don’t.
Saturday morning came I got up from my bed and went down the stairs it was a freezing like a no ordinary day in a Alaska. Mike had the muffins ready for breakfast, so I took a nice big chocolate one and ate it.
“Mike I think I am going to go home to be with my family,” I said.
“ Ok want me to drive you back to your house?” Mike asked.
“No that is fine I will take my bike back to my house but thanks”. I said
“Nick thanks for staying, you are still welcome to come back,” Mike said.
I walked back upstairs to grab my fishing rod and tackle box that I brought up with me to the guest room. I went back downstairs and went out the door and got my bike and I rode back to my house. I took the long three miles back to my house where I lived. It was starting to get dark and I stopped and got a fire started and layed there for the night with a sleeping bag that I had with me. The morning came and I woke up on the cold hard ground it was a cold night and frost was on my sleeping bag.
Packed up my sleeping bag and I got my bike and rode the two miles that I had left to go on the road. The breeze of the wind was cold as I rode back to my house with my one sister and one brother and parents who all loved me.
After I got to my house from the long one day trip that I took from Mike Thomas's house. I got my stuff and put it in the garage and went into the house from the door inside the garage and my mom was standing waiting for me at the door.
“Mom I am sorry do you forgive me?” Nick asked.
“Yes I do son but I want you to spend less time on it,” Mom said.
“I will spend more time with you guys,” Nick said.
A knock on the door and my parents opened the door and it was Mike Thomas said to Nick “you forgot your fishing pole,” my parents thanked Mike for taking care of Nick for a few days.
“No problem he was good he is a good kid,” Mike said.
“Thank you Mike,” Mom said.
Mike left our house and got in his old pickup truck and he went back to his house. My mom had dinner on the table, it was still cooking on the fryer, it was still sizzling. We ate the food and played games as a family like we always did as a family. I then realized that I loved my parents, my brother, and sister and spending time with them rather than on my devices.
