The True Image of Beauty
Everyone always turned their heads as Deanna Maxwell strutted down the boardwalk of North Miami Beach in her two-piece sequin bikini and extravagant sun hat. Her blonde curls radiated and bounced with every step she took. She would ignore the numerous attempts by the boys walking by trying to get her attention. Deanna was in high school but could be mistaken for a young adult any day. A step just to her right and behind shuffling to catch up was her reliable best friend and side kick Sarah. Sarah was in every aspect the complete opposite of Deanna. She wore a t-shirt over her bathing suit and had her dark hair in its usual messy bun.
Sarah and Deanna had been best friends since they were in diapers. Their houses were next door to each other. Throughout their childhood they had countless sleepovers, vacations and just about anything they did was together. However, Deanna was always the lead in the school play while Sarah was merely a background actor. Deanna received straight As and Sarah struggled sometimes with her math and science. However different they were these two girls could look at each other and know what the other was thinking. They were more of sisters than best friends.
Deanna's mother was THE Marsha Marington, the biggest pop artist in the 80s. Madonna envied her and Michael Jackson wanted to date her. Thirty years later Deanna will end up in a magazine every now and again and she soaks it all in. Sarah lets her have the spotlight because she knows it makes Deanna happy.
So when they were walking down the boardwalk and Deanna was politely stopped by a man with a camera neither girl was surprised. He had on big sunglasses and scraggly hair which fell onto his shoulders.
"Hey ma’am, my name is Chase Carter. I'm running a new campaign for true beauty in women and was wondering if you would be interested in coming to my studio to do some modeling."
Deanna blushes and squeals, "I would love to! I just have to check with my publicist first, but you came to the right girl."
She reaches out her hand to shake his but he doesn’t extend his.
She was too excited to even realize his gaze under the sunglasses was for Sarah to be the model. But once she came back down to Earth she was crushed. Instead of being happy for her friend she stormed off crying. Sarah knew she would talk to Deanna later and didn't want to miss up on this opportunity so she spoke with Chase and took his business card to call him later after she gave it some real thought.
Sarah couldn't help but be a little excited because for once in her life she was noticed for herself and not just the less than perfect version of Deanna. She went home and look up the website and could not seem to find it. She wasn't particularly tech savvy but didn't think much of it.
Sarah called Deanna to see if she would forgive her because she needed her help. Deanna had long forgotten the modeling issue and had moved on to what color she should paint her nails when Sarah called. So naturally Deanna rushed right over. After a few clicks of a button the two girls didn't find a "True Beauty" website they found a makeup artist promotion website. Sarah thought she was going to be sick. Chase picked the most plain girl he could find on the street to transform with his makeup and skills into this Barbie doll.
The girls decide that no one tries to mess with them and they're going to teach this guy a lesson.
On the day of the shoot, Deanna did Sarah's makeup for her. She put on so much so Sarah was hardly recognizable. And then then the girls headed off.
Sarah walked in and Chase hurried over with a crinkle of his nose and the draw of his eye brow.
"Sarah, is that you? It would be great if you could take off all that make up. We want to see your true beauty shine."
Sarah's face dropped and she and Deanna burst into laughter.
"True beauty?" Sarah questions. "I've seen your real website and I know this is just about the opposite of true beauty."
Chase tried to fight off what he thought the girls knew. “Ladies you misunderstood, that’s not me. I really want to change my image and Sarah’s pureness could help that.”
The girls did not care enough whether he was lying or telling the truth to give him a second shot. Deanna and Sarah walked out holding hands and laughing at Chase and his attempt to mess with them.

I was inspired to write this piece because my friends are always so focused on what they look like and always looking ready. I wondered why they always needed to look 'model material' everytime we went out so that is where this story starts. From here I wanted to get the perspective of someone who is always being looked down compared to someone else.
