How Low can College Crushes Go?
The air in her room was spoiled, for Jamie left a lot of disgusting things in her room that she herself can’t even tell what they are. She was packing for college, and she needed to hurry. Her own vision was becoming fuzzy in a way that almost blinding, the air didn’t help either, and the warm humidity of her room was killing her. She got up and her legs and feet felt like murder, they were asleep and numb . Once she opened the window, the new crisp air filtered and flushed out the old, stuffy atmosphere like it hadn’t even existed.. Finally, Jamie could breathe, and it felt minty fresh even though it was just regular cool air. Now, to decide whether or not to do the packing tonight and finish it or just do it all tomorrow. She decides to finish in an hour and just get it done. After an hour, she finally finishes her luggage. Jamie was a very slow packer, but she thinks of that as a favorable trait, instead of rush packing everything, she carefully decides what to bring and what not to bring. Usually girls bring about 5 luggages to any trip at all, bringing all their makeup, clothes, accessories, she got it down to one luggage and one duffle bag, she felt proud.
It’s moving day, and Jamie is getting sentimental about home in suburban New York. MIT just happens to be the “perfect” distance from NY where it’s too expensive to fly, so you’d have to take a prolonged drive to the institute. It’s about 3:00 in the morning and Jamie is getting dressed. This was one of the most difficult things she’s ever faced, having to choose good fashion with groggy eyes and a boggly mind, begging to go back to sleep. She threw on clothes the best she could and hoped for the best. She jogged to the car with her mom and dad ready to throw their arms around her, crying. She stepped into the car, and kissed her home goodbye.
In the car, Jamie was listening to some soft music while glaring outside the window. Passing all the buildings, shops, stores that she knew very well since her childhood. It’s making her sentimental about her area. She just passed the candy store she and her friend used take candy without paying. Before, she never knew that stealing was a thing, she missed those days. The days where everything seemed magical and the kids that were her age near felt clueless even if they were. Now, it’s all stress AP curriculum, SAT’s, knowing what to do and what not to do, having social pressure upon you when you go out. All the courtesy and manners that have to be executed, she hated all of it. She glared back at the scene outside, of course, the sunrise didn’t make anything better, just more beautiful. As more memories start to come, Jamie begins to think of what new memories might come at MIT, both the good ones...and the bad ones.
Arriving at the doorstep of her dorm, Jamie thinks what her roommate is going to look like, she has no clue, not even a name nor face, she doesn’t even know the gender of her roommate, she creaks the door open, empty. “She’ll have to come later I guess.” she muttered under her breath. She expected it to be a girl, I mean, what are the chances of it being a boy? And what are the chances of it being a boy and her crush? Anyways she inspected the living area, the dorm was a standard double, just like the room next her, and the next, and just like her entire floor. She was about to get the rest of her items when she heard thunder. Scrambling through her belongings to find an umbrella, she realizes, she didn’t bring one. “No, no ,no, oh no, this is bad, very, very bad.”Her outfit,, T-shirt, fuzzy sweater, and jeans. Possibly one of the worst things to wear for rain, it’s all going to soak up and smell later, Ew!
Jamie is finished with all the packing, with the help of her mom, her half of the room is looking ok, for now. She has her bedsheets set up, her half of the desk all tidied with her pens, pencils, notebooks, textbooks. Yet her partner is still not here. since her college dorm is co-ed, it means that it can contain both girl and boy students in the same facility. She just shrugged and hoped for the best, imagining if her crush would be in the same building with her. First, he’d would have to be going to the same section as her, then be randomly picked to be in the same building with her for that section alone, and hopefully be in the same floor and room. Those chances would be pretty much 1 out of 200. Her entire floor so far was about 6 guys and 8 girls. Jamie decides to just woman up and deal with the rain and eat lunch with her parents.
The family decided to eat at a local Boston seafood restaurant that was packed with people. You know a restaurant is good if it’s lined up with the locals. Since they were a party of three only, they practically go seats immediately since everyone else were larger parties. The whole place was all hustle and bustle, all busy, nice conversations rolling around, with the aroma of seafood and lemon everywhere. The whole restaurant opened up with several large wind panels from floor to ceiling, you could see the ocean and the ships pass by. It was a bit gloomy, yet, that didn’t dispirit the vibe of the eatery. They were escorted to their table and the family sat down in the wooden seats carven into sea animals, they looked more like thrones rather than seats, but they all sat down together anyways. She and her family just ordered The Captain's Plate which is just large plate filled with a lot of assorted foods. All 3 of them spoke about Jamie’s future and all the statistics that can and can’t happen.
On the drive back, her mom was in a middle of a video meeting, so she couldn’t even talk nor can her father talk either. In the car, she fantasizes about her crush being in the same floor, or even the same room maybe. The traffic is kind of stuffy, and she needs to get to know her floor fast, because in college, if you don’t make your friends the first week of school, you're doomed. Friends in college are more than just people to hang out (even though half the time you do that too), it’s different, they’re useful, if you’re in trouble you go to them and they’ll help you.
When Jamie arrived back at MIT, she gave a final goodbye to her parents, one of the most sentimental moments in her life. She walked upon the steps of the stairs to her floor, she saw an extra bag outside the door of her room. Her roommate finally came! She couldn’t wait to see her! She quickly prepped herself, doing the usual, fluff the hair, fleek the eyelashes, do the final touchups...and she opened the door. As she was entering a boy emerged, but it was someone she recognized, someone who she had always pondered about.“Hey, my name is Vincent. I think we were in the same high school together? Uhm, Jamie, right?” The boy . Jamie was astonished, she thought her roommate was going to be a girl, instead she got, Vincent, her very own crush.

My sister recently had to face the same problems as the protagonist of this story did, stress, pressure, and mixed feelings about some decisions, but this story had a little twist. If a reader were to get something from the story, it would be that even in the darkest days, there is still hope for a smile
