August 2022 fiction contest: the candle
Sally was all alone. Her one companion: a candle she had bedside. It listened to all her woes, and glowed lovingly in reply, as if listening. Sally resolved to keep it burning until she found love.
If it was extinguished, she would do the same to herself.
One day, she heard a knock at her door. She opened it to a red haired youth, who invited her on a date. It was the night of her life, and they parted with a warm embrace. Back home, she stepped into her room in shock. It was dark.
The candle had gone out.
