For Her

You’re writing a godforsaken EP for her with this title, so I thought I’d make something too.

FOR HER:

Hello. I didn’t steal your boyfriend.

I know you two broke up and you’re both single now. It’s been almost three months. Yes, I’m counting. Are you?
But in your heart, he’s still there. You think of him everyday. That’s what I call a boyfriend.

I didn’t steal your boyfriend. He told me he liked me. He spends all day talking to me. Or at least, he used to. He’s very busy these days. You wouldn’t know that, so I’m telling you.

I didn’t steal your boyfriend. He touches me. He strokes my hair. He holds me. Probably the same way he used to do with you. Remember that? I know you do.

I didn’t steal your boyfriend. He tells me everything. I know all about you, your relationship with him, and all his private secrets. We talk for hours. It’s hard to stop. He trusts me. He knows I’ll listen.

I didn’t steal your boyfriend. I’m falling for him. Every time we talk, touch, a little bit of my heart sighs and releases its tight hold of itself. He’s so complex and interesting. He’s warm to touch and when he so much as lays a hand on my knee, there’s sensation in my body. I’ve learned so much from him. He’s intelligent. I’m fascinated.

But- I didn’t steal your boyfriend. I touch his skin, I feel you. I look into his eyes, I see you. I ask where his mind is; it’s where you are.

I pout and plead for verbal affirmation, for him to express he feels for me what I do for him, but there are only mumbled responses.

I state an opinion so personal to me and who I am, and he compares it to who you are.

I hear about you all the time. I know you better than some of your distant friends- what you like and how you act, what you hate and love about him.

He doesn’t ask about me.

So, just know, I didn’t steal your boyfriend. He’s still yours. Don’t think he’s forgotten you or stopped loving you. He needs me to see you, to feel you again. He misses you.
And I hate you for that.
