Pemberwick Island, Maine is a quiet town home to Tucker Pierce, an average 14 year old on the Varsity Football team.  Pemberwick Island is also home to his best friend, Quinn, and a  mysterious girl named Tori. There’s a new drug called the Ruby overtaking the island, and it promises unlimited energy and top-notch performance.

D.J. MacHale is famous for writing his ten-book series Pendragon: Journal of an Adventure Through Time and Space, co-creating Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and writing/directing Tower of Terror for ABC’s Wonderful World of Disney.  He lives in California with his wife and daughter and loves to do vigorous outdoor activities such as backpacking, scuba diving, and skiing.  His most recent book, SYLO, was published in 2013, and is the first book of a trilogy.  As Kirkus Reviews puts it, “...Absolutely un-put-down-able, more exciting than an X-box and roller coaster combined.”
Not long after two suspicious deaths, a quarantine is put into action by Captain Granger.  The supposed cause for the sudden sequestration and the two deaths is the “Pemberwick Virus”, a disease that is unsettlingly vague and highly contagious; Captain Granger determines that the quarantine will stop the virus from spreading to the mainland.  Suddenly, everyone on the island is trapped ‘until further notice’... but they’re not going down without a fight.
I would agree that this book is very fast-paced and exciting; the author wrote this book very skillfully.  I would definitely recommend this book to anyone in 6th grade and above looking for an amazing book with an unpredictable ending.
