“Not that Korean” by Irene Park I think is a great piece about her experience of being someone of Asian culture in a society such as this one. Though I am not Asian myself, my mother re-married into a family who are Japanese, and I feel there is struggle in that. This piece caught my eye, and made me laugh, just because it was so relatable and I find it ironic how this girl fell in love with our american ways, while I meet a lot of people who absolutely love everything about Asian countries and it’s culture that you hear so much about. With all of their trends such as k-pop and anime have gradually made it world-wide, and even the stories of their ancestors have somehow managed to sneak into the hearts of many. It’s so beautiful and unique, but it’s also one that targets the most racism and stereotypical beliefs…
I am always listening to friends and family complaining about that and saying “Oh, you won’t BELIEVE what happened today at Walmart.” Always discussing this matter with my brother is very stressful, even though he finds it quite funny that a toddler in the supermarket had pointed to him and yelled “Mommy? Why is he squinting? Does he need glasses?” I can’t help but feel a bit angry, because you really can’t escape from people being racist towards you, regardless of your ethnicity or where you come from.
