Why Does Poetry Matter?
As I am about to embark on my next journey in life, college, I reflect on the things that have changed me. Poetry is one of them – such a simple but complex and intricately woven concept.
Before my senior year, I rolled my eyes, slumped into my seat, and wanted to cry when I heard the word poetry. Why poetry of all things, I would say to myself. The words didn’t make sense, they jumped from line to line, what was the point?
Then, I had an epiphany. Poetry was my canvas, my clean slate, my space. It was cathartic and a way for me to create something others would connect with. Of all the things in the world, I never would have thought poetry would be something I enjoy.
Poetry has changed my life and those around me, I know with certainty. All of the wonders of the world and historical events – all captured in poetry. Who would have thought poetry could be so important?
