The process of making Hunminjungeum (훈민정음)
Hunminjungeum (훈민정음) was made by King Sejong in 1443, when he was 47 years old. 훈민정음's purpose was to make the people of his country intelligent by being able to read. At the time, Joseun (Korea was called Joseun in the past) used letters that were used in China. The letters were complicated and took a lot of time to learn which was why commoners could not read. Sejong took this problem seriously and decided to make a whole new letter for the people of his country. His goal was to make everyone able to read and build a stable country where everyone lives a stable life. But many of his lieges had a diffrent opinion. They thought, if the commoners could read, they would interupt in the running of the country. And that it would lower the power of the king. Sejong's argument to this was, if people could read, they would read books and learn which would result in better comunication between people and less trouble in the country. Also, if people could read, Sejongwould write books on farming to help the farmers. Which would result in good quality in food and increase in people's quality of life. But his lieges didn't understand him and it is the reason why Sejongcreated 28 letters secretly with a few lieges who were on the side of Sejong. Sejong studied on many letters around the world in the process. He had great intrest in music, which influenced the shape and pronunciation of Hangeul. His intention and hard work making these letters is one of the reasons why many people are still using the letters even after a long time has passed since the making of Hangeul. King Sejong is still judged as one of the best kings that have ruled Korea.
