Should the government have a say on whom you should marry based on his or her gender? No! Should they forbid you from marrying your significant other based on his or her sexuality? No. So why should we let the government tell us who we cannot marry this person based on his or her gender and sexuality. Before the Supreme Court ruling on Oct. 6, 2014, declining to hear cases on same-sex marriages, 31 states had stated only man and woman marriages are allowed, just 19 states, and the District of Columbia allowed same-sex marriage. The government should not forbid same-sex marriages because there are people in the world who likes the same-sex as the gender, people should be able to marry whomever they want in life, and the government should not have a say in people’s personal love lives.      

People in the world may like the same-sex as the gender in relationships. What is wrong with falling for someone who is the same-sex as you? Nothing is wrong, but in this world people finds it hard to accept same-sex marriages as a part of society. If your friends are unaccepted of your choices of the same-sex in relationships, then they are not your friends. If they cannot accept you for being yourself around them, you should leave. Nobody should ever tell you who or what to like especially if he, she, or it makes you happy. People fail to realize that same-sex couples make excellent parents as well as opposite-sex couples. “Same-sex marriage is a civil, so therefore there should not be a problem with same-sex couple relationships or marriages”. (ProCon) Same-sex marriages should be recognized as if it was a regular opposite-sex couple getting married or in a relationship.

Second, people should be able to marry whom they want, not based on the partner’s gender or sexuality. For as long as I can remember, society has always dictated how a person should live their lives, but no more. It is time for change. This is the 21st century and things are starting to change even more. “The concept of “traditional marriage” has changed over the time, and the definition of marriage as always being between one man and one woman is historically inaccurate”. (Lipp) A traditional marriage does not have to be between one man and one woman because the time has changed. For instance, it is hard to be yourself knowing that people are going to judge you. Sometimes, being judged for being yourself can hurt you both emotionally and mentally. It is like your trying to be who you are as person and because it is not what society wants, you have to change and hide the real you. “Love is essential and should be opened to all couples, no matter his or her sexuality”. (Liptak) Love is something that is real and cannot be forced. It is time for change in our society and let people be whom they are or who they were meant to be. There is nothing wrong with a minor change now and again. “Same-sex couples should have access to the same benefits enjoyed by heterosexual married couples because everyone deserves to be happy”. (Lipp)           

Finally, the government should not have a say in people’s personal love lives. For almost two decades now, state legislatures have been sweeping in laws defining if whether marriage is limited between man and woman or extended to same-sex couples. “Gay marriage is protected by the US Constitution’s commitments to liberty and equality. Since 1888, the US Supreme Court has declared 14 times that marriage is a fundamental right for all, according to the American Foundation for Equal Rights. Article 16 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantees men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion... The right to marry and to found a family”. (Nussbaum) They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and its dissolution. “Gay marriage can bring financial gain to federal, state, and local governments and can help boost the economy”. (ProCon) With gay marriages, being allowed the government can receive more income. Now that time has changed and the government still cannot accept the fact that society is changing, so they still see same-sex marriages or relationships as wrong and demeaning to the society. Who is the government to say whom we should be with? The government would not like if someone told them how to run taxes, budgets, etc.  

Now understanding that people have several reasons on why same-sex marriages should be forbidden, they should understand why it should not. One reason is marriage is a privilege, not a right. Yes, everyone knows marriage is a privilege and not a right, but it should be a privilege to all relationships. How would you feel if someone stopped you from marrying someone based off his or her gender? Do not let anyone stop you from marrying whom you want to be with because of his or her gender. “Marriage should be allowed to everyone because everyone can marry or love anyone (not based on his or her sexuality) they want, it is not like everyone will die because of it.” (Messerli)    

Secondly, the reproduction process which is very unlikely to happen if two females or two males wan to have kids. Once again, everyone knows that it is hard for same-sex couple to have children, but there are options for them such as adoptions, donors, surrogates, etc. It is also a struggle for opposite-sex couples to have kids that is if his or her partner is having problems, which is or is not likely to happen. Why should same-sex couples have to suffer because the government would not let them be they are themselves to society? Everyone deserves happiness in the world.     

Even though the government has their reasons on why they should forbid same-sex marriages, they should not because all they are doing is trying to keep society the same even though it is changing right before their eyes. Along with my information stated, it shows that opposite-sex couples and same-sex couples are not very different and should be treated the same as each other. That means no matter the relationship you are in, you should not be told that you could not marry whomever you want by the government. All said and done, the government should not forbid same-sex marriages because there are people in the world who likes the same-sex as the gender, people should be able to marry whomever they want in life, and the government should not have a say in people’s personal lives. Love is deserves to be shared through all things.
