The Menehune Fishpond
When we got to the local Park Rapids art museum, I was very curious about what kind of art would be there. Our class met in the sculpture room. I didn’t really understand the whole aspect behind the sculptures. The art in there was different and not really my style. But then, we walked around the top floor of the museum to find a piece of art that spoke to us. After a little while of looking, I found this picture I thought was in Alaska. The picture was speaking to me. I immediately started writing the ideas I came up with down on my notebook.
The picture had a very beautiful scene of what looked like a lake. The sky was as blue as blue could be. The trees were still as if they’d never move. The entirety of the picture was breathtaking.
Lex Thomson took this photograph of the Menehune Fishpond in Kauai, Hawaii. The photo takes you on a hike up the mountains to find the perfect vantage point of nature. From the point of view of the camera, one can see other mountains, not very steep, covered in trees that look like a green blanket of grass covering the land. Reddish-brown spots on the ground seem like they’re tiny deserts on the side of the mountains.
One can also see the fishpond, as it looks like a round edged patch of wavy silk. There’s a river of some sort that passes behind the opaque glass of the pond. The shape of the figure in the pond dances with the wind. The reflection of the water also changes with the shift of the wind. The water looks deep enough to hold a ship.
On this particular day, the sky was partially cloudy, with few giant cotton balls in the blue sky. The sky and the plants remind me of my backyard at home. I remember always being outside with my brother. We always had fun playing outside when my he and I were young. We played frisbee and football all of the time. We also played baseball. I remember the first time hitting a tennis ball over our hedge with a blue plastic bat I always played with.
When I look at this photograph, I feel like I’m there, taking the picture. I feel like I’ve just hiked up the mountain to get this photo and I lay down to rest. After a while, I touch the ground to steady myself as I stand up to look at the view. The view is captivating and I can see the clouds moving from the left to the right. I feel a breeze that is slight yet noticeable.* I can see trees swaying in that breeze and I immediately think of home. I think of sitting in my backyard or going for a walk in the windy weather. The rustling of the leaves near me and below me in the wind gives me a relaxing feeling that I could listen to while laying on the ground all day.
I’m still out of breath from the altitude as it feels like I cannot catch my breath. The air is thin. louds start to cover up the mountaintops in the distance. The smell and taste of the fresh, cool helps me to take deep breaths to recover my lungs from the long hike. It makes me think of how there is no urban life near to destroy the beautiful image of this wonderful place. I feel one with nature as I look to the hazy horizon. The sun warms me up as the temperature changes to the midday heat and there’s no place I’d rather be.
I see the beautiful work of God when I see this photograph. It makes me realize how beautiful his creation is and how many other pictures of places could be used to envision the same idea in others. All of God’s creation is beautiful, and the Menehune Fishpond is one of the best examples of natural beauty. I can only imagine all of his creation like the wildlife within the photo even that we can’t see. It’s absolutely breathtaking.
What I feel when I see this picture is sheer peace. It makes me want to not worry about anything else in the world. I could sit here forever and just take everything in. As i lay in one of the rooms of the museum, I think that if I were in this picture, nothing could keep me from leaving. I would build a house in this exact spot and live right there.
