You'd have to know them
the best kinds of people are the ones you can’t explain
the ones who are too complicated to be written down
too extreme for a sentence
those are the ones you need to experience, but you can’t just pick and choose what parts you like
you have to sit there and feel it all, watch it all, hear it all.
you have to sit and watch them laugh over the kid that fell over but you also have to watch them laugh because you said you love them.
you have to watch them cry because a dog died in a movie but you also have to watch them cry because for them it hurts to wake up.
you have to watch them sit and smile because they see something beautiful, but you also have to watch them sit and smile because they’re thinking of how free they could feel if they could just disappear.
you have to watch them watch the sunset because it’s beautiful, but while you do that you have to face the fact that one day they might be the sunset.
you have to realize how precious they are, how amazing it is you’re here at the same time as them, and how serendipitous it is that your paths crossed with this esoteric being.
you have to realize that they don’t know that, that you have to show them. you need to know that you’re not the only one who’s experiencing it. they’ll notice your gaze, your motions, your words, your actions. and they’ll take the meaning of them to heart.
the best kind of people are the ones whose story is hidden.
the ones who you need to wait for,
the ones who need to know they’re loved,
the ones you need to care for,
the ones who need to be reminded they’re human, that it’s okay to be sad, that it’s okay to have feelings.
the best kind of people are the ones who are more complex than surface level.
the pernicious ones, who need to be loved,
the esoteric ones, who need your effort,
the insouciant ones, who need to know it’s okay to feel,
the irascible ones, who need to be listened to.
the ones who you can try and describe but who you just can’t seem to find the words for, you can only ever seem to explain part of, the ones who make you find yourself telling others that
“you’d need to know them”
