I need you now
more than ever.
But you'reso distant
that I'm starting to forget
what we everhad.

The smell of Victoria's
Secret perfume surrounds
you.But to me
you reek of insincerity.
The words you spoke
werenever written in stone,
and like you,
their meaningschange.

I see a goof-ball girl
shelled by leather pants
andcute shirts,
too preoccupied for the
struggle of finding a wayout.
Thinning cheeks suck your
best friend smile further
awayfrom my reach
every day, and your eyes
settle into that graycanyon
you like to call love.

Before, we were happy.
Andlollipop-stained tongues
never found an end
to conversation.
Iremember the plays
made up in autumn-crinkled
leaves. I alwaysgave
you the lead role.
And when we made up
games, we alwaysplayed
by your rules.
And I remember knowing
that it wasokay
because you always knew
all that was right,
and what wouldbe best for us.

Now I sit here,
photograph in hand,
andwonder if maybe
you were faking it.
Maybe you never knew,
andnever will know
just what is best for us.
