Dear Vietnam Veteran,

First, I want to thank you for everything that you and your fellow servicemen and women have done. Although everyone’s definition of freedom is different, most do not know the sacrifices veterans like you had to go through in order to make our country into what it is today. You not only fought for our country, but also your family, and me. I have no words to express how incredibly grateful I am for you and your service. Welcome home!

My name is Brianna G. and I am a high school senior. The thought of some of my guy friends receiving the paperwork to sign up for the draft once they turn 18 is terrifying. I can’t imagine the bravery it took to give up where you were at the moment to go fight in the war that everyone was against, at such a young age. I understand you had a job to finish even if you did not voluntarily go overseas, but I am eternally thankful for your bravery, sacrifice and determination.

When I was in eighth grade I went on a trip to Washington, D.C. with my school to visit the war memorials. I have never felt such appreciation for veterans. I did not expect for the monuments to have such an immense impact on me and how I view veterans. I hope you felt the same excitement and appreciation for yourself along with other veterans for your sacrifices and hard work.

My heart immediately sinks when I hear the stories of how Vietnam veterans were treated when they arrived back in America after serving. They should have greeted you the way every veteran should be greeted and should have thanked you a million times for what you had done, no matter if they agreed with the war or not. I truly want to give you the “Welcome Home” that you have deserved for all of these years.

I am incredibly grateful for you and your sacrifices you made in order to fight for our country. Again, I hope you feel the excitement and honor that I felt while visiting your memorial. Welcome Home!
