Educator of the Year
EOY
Mr. Kevin Walker, my Civics teacher at DMA, is my nomination for the Educator of the Year Award. In addition to him being my nomination for being a great teacher, he is also my lacrosse coach. Mr. Walker always demonstrates a positive attitude towards learning both in his classroom and on the lacrosse field. He motivates his students immediately upon entering his classroom by saying, “today is a work day”.
Mr. Walker is very supportive of the DMA family. Whether it is something that he wears to class or whether it is his appearance at sporting events, parades, or other important occasions for cadets, you can tell he is a teacher who likes where he works and is proud to let others know that he is a true Seahawk. He takes pride in the fact that students ask him to come to events to support them, and he clears his calendar to come out and cheer them on. The students can always count on Mr. Walker to be there.
Mr. Walker makes his classes thought provoking. He encourages us to exchange ideas with him on current or trending topics. He makes the material we have to learn interesting. He is honest with his answers to questions we have for him. Since Mr. Walker is a very approachable person, it is easy for us to express ourselves and go to him to talk about anything that we might have on our mind. He always finds time in his schedule for us and his time is very much appreciated.
In addition to Mr. Walker being my favorite teacher, he is also my lacrosse coach. He demonstrates the same leadership qualities he shows in his classroom on the playing field. He shows integrity on the field in many ways. One of these ways is that he is quick to tell the entire team when he makes a mistake, or when he feels you are not playing to your potential. He will quickly respond by telling you what you should do to improve. He is also willing to give his time freely to you whether you need extra time on the field or in his classroom.
I think Mr. Kevin Walker is an asset to DMA. He is a great role model to look up to in both teaching and coaching. I believe I have become a better lacrosse player because of his guidance, and I look forward to attending his class every day. There is no better candidate for the Educator of the Year Award than Mr. Kevin Walker.
