The Misunderstood Daughter
“Deniya, you won’t do anything with your life when you get older” is a phrase I’ve heard too many times that I’m starting to believe it. A phrase I’ve heard from my parents and older sister although I’ve told them countless times that I’m planning on becoming a surgeon. A phrase that shackles me in my mind that I won’t prevail to be what I want to be. A phrase that shackles my inner self to never amount to anything. A phrase that has shackled me into believing that maybe they are right. During the summer I was supposed to go on a college tour to LSU, and it was early in the morning, so that would mean I would have to wake up even earlier than 9 o’clock just to leave the house on time. “Deniya, you still going to LSU.” “No.” I couldn’t wake up, I’m surprised I heard her through my sleep because I had went to sleep late and barely got any sleep. I didn’t get home from cheering at the football game till late that night. Later that morning when I woke up again my momma and daddy kept telling me “you just don’t want do nothing with your life” or “you too lazy” Once again I hear my mom complaining “Deniya, you won’t do anything with your life when you get older.” When the reason I didn’t go on the tour was because the night before I was up basically all night and barely got any sleep.
