What's Wrong with these People?
Last summer, my family and I were at a hotel in Italy for a week. At first, everything was nice. The beach was beautiful, the food was amazing, and the people were kind. After going to the beach and swimming, I started getting hungry. Therefore, I told my parents that I wanted to go to a restaurant and eat. They agreed and we went to a restaurant. We ordered food and started waiting for it. Soon, another family came, and sat at a nearby table and also placed their orders. I had no clue what was going to happen soon.
While waiting for the pizza, I started talking to my mom in a very normal manner. That's when the people sitting in the nearby table, started to point us out with their fingers and also stared at us disgracefully. They seemed to be discussing something, I felt like they were talking about us. This experience shocked me, I started thinking about the reason why, and soon the answer was clear. It was because of the language that we spoke. This made me feel both angry and sad. I hadn't expected that something like this would happen to me in a hotel in Italy. Later, I tried to understand where they were from but I couldn't figure it out.
After leaving the restaurant, I couldn't stop thinking about what had happened. I was trying to understand why those people acted that way towards me and my family. We had Western clothes on, we were doing something very normal and waiting for our food. As I kept thinking, I started to believe that they had automatically assumed that we were Muslims since they apprehended that we were from Turkey. But this was still not what I was looking for. I figured out that I really wanted to know the reason why people are racist in general. I concluded that they saw themselves as superior compared to others which was very weird for me but not according to them.
I also realized that the people who are racist or sexist have a similar understanding of other people who are not the same as them. They both tend to believe that they themselves are superior or in some way better than the person who is different compared to them. People who are racist or sexist also discriminate against a certain race or sex which further results in arguments between people and separation within the society.
Overall, it is a really bad thing to generalize people according to the language that they speak or their culture. There is no need for having stereotypes about people from different races, and everyone should be equal. I thought about this topic for a while and concluded that the best thing anybody can do to help stop this problem is to try communicating with the people who have this wrong type of view. Letting them know that there are different kinds of people in different societies. This way, we can change the minds of many racist people. However, racism is a very big worldwide problem and no matter what we do we can't stop it completely, racist people will keep existing.
