The call that taught me love
I grew up blessed and “spoiled” with love. It was a shock to my parents when I expressed the desire to study in US semi-independently after I finished elementary school. However, they respected my decision. My mom shuttled between China and Florida for many years until Covid suddenly interrupted this routine. After a semester of semi-quarantine life and away from home for over a year, I accepted the invitation to Disney without hesitation. I called my mom before the trip. "Go ahead, just be careful," mom replied after a momentary silence.
Unsurprisingly, I got Covid. "Mom, I'm cold and scared.” "Madeline, dear, don't hang up; go to sleep. Mom is always with you." I fell asleep to the rustling sound of her turning pages, just like those nights when I was still in China.
The next morning my phone displayed a six-hour call. My heart filled with warmth. This love has given me strength, courage, and faith. Ever since, I have endeavored to bring love and courage to others when they need it the most. I started by helping my teammates who have a hard time due to their financial needs or athletic schedules. The smile on their faces is the best reward.
