Have you ever felt that other people expect you to be or act a certain way because of your culture or your nationality?

That is a question that I believe applies to all international people since they are exposed to such diverse ethnical backgrounds, we are very open minded and understanding of the world we live in but almost every other person around the world does not have the opportunity to experience that. For me to answer that question, I have experienced people expecting me to act a certain way but this didn't really offend me, rather it got me thinking about how we are wired to unconsciously classify people based on their race, sex, or religion. I have never dealt with racism or sexism personally throughout my life, although I have been exposed and lived in many different countries around the world. I am Lebanese as well as American, I was not born in the US but I am American as my dad is American, my mom is Lebanese thus making me from two distinct countries. I like to think that I am from two of the most openminded places in their region, New York and Beirut. I have realized that when I usually mention that I am Lebanese here, in Saudi Arabia, people automatically label me as a Muslim Arab, but once they find out I am Catholic and my dad is American, they have a completely different perception of me. This mentality is degrading our society, it is so sad to see that people change their relationship and recognition of me due to my religion and race. I met someone here in Riyadh and we became very close friends over the past two years, but we never discussed anything about religion or race, but one time that topic was brought up and as soon as he found out I was Christian, he would treat me differently, as if I he just met me, but we've been friends for two years! This innocent did not offend me but got me irritated from the way he acted around me ever since, as if I am a different person because of my religion.  I have experienced some expectation of being or acting in a certain way being where I come from and what I believe in but that was never meant in an insulting or rude way, although I believe this type of mind-set is demeaning to the society we live in.
