The World We Live In
Do you ever question yourself as to if your hair is okay? Is this outfit good enough to wear to school? Or to a party? Well, this is the kind of world we live in. We live in a world that makes us second guess how we look from head to toe. The society that we live in today is more worried about what we wear than how we feel.
How do I know this? Because it happened to me before. Don't get me wrong I've been judged many of times, but when it comes to my appearance I like to take risks. The biggest risk I took was in 9th grade on the last day of classes, I decided to put blonde highlights in my hair. You're probably thinking that's not a big deal, but for me it was. It was something that was going to become permanent, there was no going back. The next morning I woke up shocked because I didn't expect the highlights to be so bright. It was different for me. I was afraid of what everyone else would think, what my friends would say, but I liked it. I walked into school with confidence, but as people began to stare and whisper around me, my confidence slowly started to disappear. I started to second guess myself and become self conscious all because of society. There were a few compliments I got from people here and there, but a lot of weird stares from others. It took the compliments coming from my friends for me to feel truly confident again like I was before I walked into school. That shouldn't have been the case. Even though they were my friends, it shouldn't have been them that made me feel confident in my look. I should have felt confident from the beginning without my friend's help.
That's exactly what I mean when I say society has a huge influence on our appearance, when they shouldn't have. For example why isn't it okay for a person of a different race other than black to wear something associated with rappers like Tupac Shakur or Biggie Smalls? Why do people decide to look at them like they're a joke if they do? Because of their race? Why can't a black person listen to country music or anything other than R&B and Hip-pop? Music is music no matter who wrote it, sung it, or what their race is. And believe it or not this kind of judgment is influenced by society and only society. Why do we let society control us?
We shouldn't care what everyone else is wearing we should wear whatever brings us joy. If you're not with today's trends and what everyone else is wearing you're considered an outcast, different, "weird" and that shouldn't be the case. At the end of the day you're the person who has to wear it not them. You're the one who has to feel confident in your look. You want to start a trend on your own, you want to standout, you want to be different. We live in a world where we are not only judged by the color of our skin, but also our appearance. We judge people based on what they wear and how they look, not knowing what they're going through and if they're in need of a friend. It's not all of us though, but its most of us who cares what society thinks, while others can go out in anything without second guessing themselves. The world we live in isn't perfect, so why should we let society determine what we wear?
