A night airborne above the Bay Area, California
The valley was rimmed by jagged black mountains that were rough against the velvet-smooth navy-blue sky. To the west, the mountains shrunk until they were nothing more than steep sea bluffs, dropping hundreds of feet into the ebony ocean. The shadowy mountains and water formed the brims of a scintillating basin: the valley floor was carpeted with acres and acres of white, orange, and yellow lights. They were a sparkling, dazzling rug that seemed to stretch endlessly to the ends of the Earth, eventually fading into the darkness of the water and the mountains. This was magic. This was the place, edged with jagged ebony, where stars enveloped the Earth.
