Group Work
Author's note: I had to write a play or a skit with the theme of Respect.
(Princess on cell phone, Geek playing with calculator, Goth doodling)
Teacher: *Walks Into Classroom* Okay class... Come to order now… Devon sit down! Richard stop throwing paper at Mark! *Sigh*
(Princess still on cell phone, Geek sitting up straight, Goth looks up annoyed)
Goth: *Stands up and Shouts* Quiet! *Sigh* *Sits back down*
Teacher: As you all know, Graduation is coming up very, very soon.
(Class cheers for a moment.)
Teacher: But… unfortunately the Morison triplets have moved, leaving the Grad presentation unfinished. Unless three tremendous students are willing to step up and take their place, then there will not be a Graduation presentation. *Glances around the room*
(Silence)
Teacher: Any volunteers? Yes? No? Maybe so?
(Princess on cell phone, Geek attentively sitting straight, Goth resting head on desk)
Teacher: *Sigh* Angela, since you seem so busy on your cellular device, then you will be the first tribute.
Princess: *Snobby Voice* No thanks. And B.T.Ws, it’s Angel.
Teacher: You have no choice in the matter, Angela.
Princess: Ehh, Whatever.
Teacher: Theresa, since you’re such a wonderful student, would you like to be another volunteer?
Geek: *Smiles* Of course Mrs. Saito!! I would love to help out with the Graduation Presentation!
Teacher: *Smiles* Fantabulous, I love your enthusiasm.
Goth: *Groans*
Teacher: *Smile Drops* Do you have something you have to say Miss. Anderson?
Goth: *Fake Smiles* Yes, but I don’t think I should share it.
Teacher: Good, because you are also going to be helping the other two girls with the Graduation Presentation.
Goth: *Fake enthusiasm* Fantabulous! *Drops head back on desk*
Teacher: So glad you’re looking forward to it. Now you three have until next week to complete this assignment. I expect you to be working hard before and after school…
Princess: *Snobby Voice* After school! That just doesn't work for me.
Teacher: And why not, Miss. Winsworth.
Princess: Like, me and Britney have shopping plans! Then tomorrow me and Lauren have a medi pedi appointment, then Wednesday me and Brad are going on a date! Like, it’s just not happening.
Teacher: I’m sorry Angela, but you’re just going to have to cancel. I’m sure they will understand.
Princess: You don’t get it, I just can’t cancel on them. They’re like, my best friends. And Brad’s my boyfriend, I defs can’t cancel on him, it’s our one week anniversary!
Goth: *Mockingly* *Sarcastically* OMG, it’s you’re one week anniversary. You defs can’t cancel or it’s, like, the end of the world!
Princess: *Glares at Goth* Shut it freak; go back to the underworld; or whatever.
Geek: Guys, don’t fight.
Teacher: I can see you three will work together perfectly. I expect it to be done by next week, just in time for Graduation. Now let me explain the History of the Comma…
(Princess, Goth, & Geek sitting at a table)
(Princess on cell phone, Goth drawing, Geek looking through notebook)
Geek: *Slams the notebook on the table* This is absolutely horrible!
(Princess still on cell phone, Goth glances up)
Goth: *Uninterestedly, tapping fingers on table* What is?
Geek: The half finished draft that the Morison triplets left. Half finished! They had two months to put this together and all they come up with is this!
Goth: What did you expect from them? They're the Morison triplets.
Princess: *Finally looks up from cell phone* It can't be that bad, let me see.
Geek: *Hands notebook over to Princess*
Princess: *Flips through notebook* Oh my glam! It’s lacking in glitter and glam, a total social tragedy!
Geek: Hardly, it has utterly no organization or consistency, such a disaster.
Goth: *Peeks over* It looks plain.
Princess: *Looks at Goth weirdly* What are you drawing, anyways?
Goth: *Stares coldly at Princess for a moment* You’re worse nightmare… *Holds up art book*
Princess: *Shrieks* I saw that in my dreams last night!
Goth: *Laughs darkly* I know…
Princess: *Gasp* Who are you again? I don’t think I even know either of you.
Geek: It’s a fairly large school, once you know our names you’ll probably recognize us.
Princess: Doubt it, but whatever; what’s your names then?
Geek: *Proudly* I am Theresa Fauna Zymper. Straight A student with perfect attendance at Elliot Falls School.
Princess: *Glances over at Goth* What about you, gothy.
Goth: Ever.
Princess: What do you mean, ‘Ever’?
Goth: *Slowly* My name is Ever.
Princess: Is that short for something?
Goth: Need to know basis and you don’t need to know.
Princess: Whatever, I’m Angel, Angela Rose Winsworth. Daughter of Griffith Elliot Winsworth, the descendant of Elliot Winsworth the founder of this Town, Elliot Falls.
Goth: Explains your attitude.
Princess: Whatever. Anyways we should, like, totally start from scratch, because there is no way something so glamourless is going to have the privilege to have Angela Rose Winsworth’s name on it.
Geek: I agree, I can’t let Mrs. Saito down!
Goth: *Puts head down* I don’t want to be here…
Princess: *Looks down at cell phone* Oooh! I got a text from my Brad! He’s the bestest boyfriend a girl could ever want!
Geek: What did he say?
Princess: I got to go, bye!
(Princess hops up and races out of the room happily)
Geek: Wait, what about… *Sigh* I should go too, I don’t want to go past my curfew.
Goth: It’s only six.
Geek: *Jumps up* Six! Oh my, I should really get going! I’ll have a draft of the Presentation done by tomorrow, farewell!
(Geek rushes out of the room)
(Goth drops head on the desk)
Geek: *Hyperventilating* Oh my goodness, where is Ever?
(Princess on cell phone not paying attention to Geek)
Geek: Angel! Aren't you worried?
Princess: *Mutters* Sure.
(Goth walks in)
Goth: Sup.
Geek: We were… I was so worried. Where have you been?
Goth: *Shrugs* I had… better, things to do.
Geek: Better Things!? *Sigh* I don't even want to ask. On a better note, I completed the first draft of the Graduation Presentation.
Princess: Really! Let me see, let me see! *Put cell phone away and grabs binder from Geek*
Princess: *Flips through binder* *Throws binder across room* It absolutely stinks!
Geek: *Rushes to get binder* Be careful! It’s state of the art…
Goth: *Cuts Geek off* Nobody cares!
Geek: Well excuse me, it’s not my fault that I’m the only one actually putting an effort into this project!*Picks binder up off floor*
Princess: You are excused.
Goth: *Looks at Princess in a weird way*
(Princess on cell phone, Geek working, Goth drawing)
(Silence)
Bully: (Walks in) Hey! Goth chick!
Goth: (Looks Away From Bully)
Bully: Underworld queen, didn't you hear me calling you? Or are you too busy talking to your “Friends”?
Princess: (Laughs)
Geek: (Ignores And Continues Working)
Bully: Are you deaf or something? (Walks Over And Pushes Goth)
Goth: (Stumbles And Tries To Ignore Bully)
Princess: (Smiles)
Bully: Say something Freak! Aye, Freak! (Continually Pushes Goth)
Geek: (Mutters Not Looking Up) Guys stop…
Bully: You say something loser? You think you’re so smart? If you gotta say something, say it!
Geek: (A Little Louder) I said: stop it!
Bully: (Starts Laughing)
Goth: (Looks Nervous)
Princess: (Whispers To Geek) Don’t do this…
Geek: (Stands Up)
Bully: What are y-
Geek: (Takes Binder And Hits Bully Across The Face)
Bully: (Stumbles To The Ground) You little-
Goth: (Jumps Up And Kicks Bully In The Stomach)
Goth: (Grabs Geek And They Both Run Out Of The Room)
Princess: (Calls Someone)
Princess: Oh my glam, Brad, you'll not believe what just happened… (Walks Out Of The Room)
(Geek Is Working On Project, Goth Is Drawing)
Princess: (Walks In All Down And Depressed)
Geek: What’s the matter Angel?
Princess: Do you really want to know?
Goth: Actually, no, not reall-
Princess: (Breaks Down Crying) Brad broke up with me! It was our one week anniversary, how could he do that to me? We were in love! Can you just…believe that?
Goth: Yes.
Geek: How could you be so inconsiderate? What happened to your heart?
Goth: It’s dead.
Princess: Seriously you're so mean, like, how-
Goth: Oh, I’m the mean now?
Geek: Guys stop! It’s going to turn out into a fight!
Goth: It sure is.
(Everybody starts yelling at each other.)
(Just then, Mrs.Saito walks in.)
Teacher: Okay! I've had it with you three; okay?
(Everyone Quiets And Looks Shocked)
Teacher: Goth chick, smile for once. Life sucks for all of us; it’s not just you!
Princess: (Snickers)
Teacher: Okay we already know you got massively dumped; nobody cares!
Princess: (Looks Offended)
Teacher: Geek, stop wearing those ugly glasses and stop being such a suck-up; it’s obnoxious!
Geek: (Slowly takes off glasses, Looking upset)
Teacher: Look, you guys are all different, I get that: we have the Goth (Points To Goth) who never smiles; seriously would it kill you to smile.
Goth: Yes.
Teacher: Quiet! We have the spoiled brat that everyone hates but pretends to like because she’s rich; tone down on the make-up, this isn't Batman, don’t try to be a Joker wannabe.
Princess: (Pouts)
Teacher: Don’t give me that look, you know it’s true. Seriously you girls should stop and learn to respect each other. Newsflash y’all are gonna end up in the same place- the ground. (Point to the ground)
(Silence)
Princess: (Jumps Up) I’m going to be late for my medi-pedi appointment!
Teacher: Sit back down!
Princess: (Sits back down) Oh…
Teacher: Pull yourself together ladies and GET this project done; or you WILL regret it! Goodbye.
(Silence)
Goth: Guys, she’s actually right.
Princess: Totally.
Teacher: (From A Distance) Stop talking like that!
Princess: (Pouts)
Geek: Okay, here’s what we're going to do…
Geek: Parents, teachers, future graduates, thank you all for coming out to witness our fellow classmates as they finish an important chapter in their lives and as they begin another life molding one.
Princess: When we first started to write this speech, we were absolutely clueless about what to do. Once we thought about it for some time, we started to get ideas. At first we couldn't agree on what to include; considering how different each of us are. So we decided to read aloud our favorite childhood memories, with extensive help from our wonderful teacher Mrs. Saito, we created a compromise by including all of our different charitable memories.
Goth: As children the world seems so innocent; so full of happiness and joy. We were so naïve as to believe that everything was all rainbows and unicorns. But as we progressed through life, it seemed to get tougher and tougher; until to a point where everything seemed to be caving in on us and monsters lurked around every corner looking to harm us. I remember once when I was little, my best friend and I would go exploring in the woods; one day we stumbled upon a pond. Without even acknowledging the consequences, we dived in. The rest of the day was filled with fun; we slashed each other and made competitions on who could swim faster or who could hold their breath longer. Once the sun started to set, we headed to home soaking wet and coated with mud. Our mothers were extremely upset, but we knew in the back of our minds that it was worth it. (Smiles Before Stepping Back)
Princess: When you’re growing up, you all know that you’re tastes in stuff always changes. Well, when I was eleven my older sister, Andria, was obsessed with the Spice Girls. They were on a world tour at the time and Andria bought two tickets for her and her friend to go see them. Her friend ended up not being able to go, so my sister allowed me to tag along with her. I had the best time of my life. I spent the whole night with my sister, screaming the lyrics to every song, dancing to the beat, and we even had the chance to meet them! It was incredibly amazing! Defiantly a time I will always remember.
Geek: Growing up, all I ever cared about was getting good grades, and being the top academic in all of my classes; I rarely experienced anything other than studying. But there was one time that I vividly recall being an actual child. I was ten at the time and I remember my father had rushed into my room, excitement radiated off of him. He all but dragged me out of my room and out the door, showing off his new rebuilt four-wheeler. We spent the rest of the day driving around, showing it off to the town. I remember the excitement and the adrenaline of it very well; I will never forget that day for as long as I live.
Princess: It’s the experiences that will mark the truly remarkable years of your life. We have been given gifts that we sometimes overlook and take for granted: education, experience, extremely good-looks (Hair-Flip) With these gifts comes responsibility of choice. We alone decide how our talents are bestowed upon the world-to either further our own interests and passions or to gain the momentary approval of our peers and cohorts. This is our destiny and we hold it in the palm of our hands. As you embark on the rest of your life, I urge you to do what you love; because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
Goth: Before you all just throw this to the back of your mind and think that it’s just another speech or lecture that doesn’t matter. Think about everything that we just said. It may seem like just any other ordinary Graduation Speech, but once you realize the hard work and effort put into it behind the scenes, you’ll come to realize the true meaning of this whole thing. It was never about the Graduation, or the actual work put into it; it’s about what we learned along the way that helped us accomplish this. We've learned to be profound; to look deeper into the actual task at hand. We've learned how to problem solve; such as having to work under a certain time frame of one week. We've learned patients; that’s pretty self-explanatory. But most of all we've learned respect; because we would've never completed this if we never respected each other enough to listen to what we had to say and how we felt about certain things. That is all, enjoy the rest of your evening.
