Light and Dark
Author's note:
This is a very personal piece to me, because I've always found light and dark fascinating. It's a little long for a poem, but I've got a lot to say and not a lot of time to say it. Enjoy!
Before this world was something huge,
It was just a tiny planet.
There were two sides; called dark and light.
Each one competing for who ran it.
The rulers of these distinct lands,
Were opposites, one way or ‘nother.
One was a ghostly, half-dead thing,
The second nothing like the other.
The second, was,
the least expected.
A little girl, not even ten!
All the magic, she protected.
The thing that made her very special,
Was something only some would know.
She had those eyes that glistened like stars,
The eyes that never ceased to grow.
One very special day,
the girl went out to gander.
For this was her birthday,
and she just wanted a meander.
She climbed the peak that separated
Light from dark and musky matter.
She stepped out of the shining sun
And into night that still grows fatter.
As she walked through woods and endless swamps,
She heard a young voice call.
The young voice of a child like her;
But a voice that only bawled.
The little girl, felt compelled to the voice,
For it was her duty to protect it.
So quickly she broke into a run,
Hoping she could get to it.
She tripped and fell and tumbled through the moist swamp.
Her feet making loud stomps.
But the voice was not there,
it was just a hoax.
The only thing awaiting her,
Was a long and crawling ghost.
With over one hundred sprawling legs,
And skin like blood on a white rose.
It’s eyes were sharp and red with glints of horror.
It’s antennas stretching wide.
It’s gaze fixed on the little girl,
“Destroy the magic!” It replied.
It’s voice was strange; unnatural.
Like it was once a living creature,
But now something unfathomable.
The little girl backed away,
From the thing that stood before her,
Afraid she’d gone too far that day,
Too overruled by wonder.
She reached the peak with nothing left:
No breath, no wish, no smile.
And as the beast rose to attack,
She jumped across a mile.
She landed on the edge of the peak,
Dividing the two boarders.
She wrapped herself in magic
And stood in one small corner.
The magic flew, like magnetized,
To the little girl’s hand.
She grabbed one orb and threw it,
But sadly, nowhere did it land.
Eventually, the little girl,
started running out of magic.
She bent her head in shame and sorrow.
She knew her fight was tragic.
She took a step away from Beastie.
She knew that it was over.
She knew she would protect her magic,
But not long enough to destroy her.
She let the beast submerge her,
In endless dark and sorrow.
The little girl, once full of light,
Knew there would be no tomorrow.
As she crouched into a darkened world,
Only ‘few orbs glowed around her,
The beast grew stronger off her tears.
And then he would surround her.
The beast flowed over her expansive,
Beautiful terrain.
Turning everything that once was bright,
To an eerie shade of grey.
The little girl did nothing,
To prevent such things to happen.
For the hope in every child’s heart,
Must eventually wilt and blacken.
But as the little girl let go of her last orb of magic,
As the last orb extinguished out its light.
As the little girl crouched lower,
And understood her fright.
A little spark of happiness,
Flew onto her small hand.
It landed in a sway of light
This spark was nothing grand.
The little girl looked up again,
Wiped her melancholy tears.
She took the spark onto her hand
and bounced it near her ear.
The spark; the only light in land,
Made the little girl’s heart flutter.
For the spark had been her only hope;
a hope that love would conquer.
At once the little girl,
Clambered to her feet.
She tucked the spark into her pocket,
And went to face the Beast.
The girl marched faster,
as her magical land relit.
To something beautiful,
like it once was and is.
She knew she would protect it,
Even though it meant her life.
For she called this land home;
A home that kept her bright.
She would fight for every orb there was,
To keep them safe and glowing.
For a world filled to the brim with darkness,
Is not a world she would be knowing.
And suddenly, without a warning,
the girl began to change.
From a little girl filled with light,
To a goddess in exchange.
The little girl, at once, was lifted in the air.
Her orbs all wrapped around her.
They wiggled and swung until she was,
Completely submerged by laughter.
The orbs spread through her body,
Lighting up like fire.
She leaned her head back and grew strong,
She rose a little higher.
The orbs changed her into something indescribable;
The goddess of all goddesses to name.
With long and luscious flowing hair,
And eyes that glowed like burning flame.
Her look turned fierce,
Her soul turned strong.
Nothing would have her heart pierced.
She would live for long.
The Beast itself,
Had changed as well.
From a mangled little shadow,
To a demon spawned in hell.
He waited with his long dark scepter,
One million hands at ready.
He sat on his large black throne,
But felt a bit unsteady.
She walked across the clouds,
With all the magic orbs behind.
She walked dauntless, through the eerie grey.
Nothing could penetrate her mind.
The clouds beneath her sloped down.
She descended the steps,
And flew through the air.
Over land thrown into darkness’ depths.
When her feet touched the ground,
A big bang erupted.
She was thrown back with the sheer force of blow,
Her orb line corrupted.
And out of the chasm that she had created,
A dark spiraling smoke whirled into place.
It took the shape of a demon,
With a red-tinted skull face.
She lay on the ground,
All her muscles paralyzed.
But she caught herself in this long and lonesome fall
And then her heart crystalized.
She would not let this darkness get to her soul.
She was too good to let it,
To let darkness eat her whole.
So she burrowed her brow and stood up defiant.
A figure of heroism. An act so giant.
She spread her arms out, floating into the air.
On the harsh and horrifying landscape,
Her eyes were forced to bear.
The little girl raised her hand and all her orbs,
Flew to command.
Beastie did the same, and all the darkness
Smoked to demand.
The little girl stood her ground,
Her approach gradual.
Beastie didn’t see what she was doing,
For he wasn’t human,
Just an animal.
Beastie slithered towards the goddess,
He threw his claws up in the air.
He screeched so loud,
A sound escaped
and let out a deafening blare.
The girl was shot back forty feet
And landed in a little heap.
At this moment when all hope was at stake,
She closed her eyes slowly.
Took every breath she could take.
She searched deep inside for a fighter
It seems.
She had called the fighter over,
Like a dream.
She told the fighter quietly,
That she was cold and scared.
That she couldn’t do it alone.
That her magic should be spared.
She asked the fighter,
If it could help her out.
Help her finish all reality, all imaginable doubt.
The small fighter that lived in her brain,
Jumped to the task without a word
The fighter took grip of her mind,
And together they got up and stood.
The newly found warrior,
Glared right at the Beast.
Lifted arms in the air,
Then all her magic was released.
She roared as all her power charged the creature.
This goddess wasn’t scared to lose her life,
For she was sure that her magic would be protected
And win this never ending fight.
The magic stabbed at Beastie,
Like a sword.
He roared and screamed,
His shouts were filled with gore.
But the girl screamed back,
With more magic than ever.
She forced it all at Beastie,
Her death-defying movements living forever.
But when the Beast was weakest,
At his dying point,
He screeched again and threw his power,
All at the little girl,
Making this her dying hour.
And as she took,
Her last couple breaths,
Something pulled against her pocket.
She fished it out,
Put it on her chest,
And watched out of one eye socket.
It was the spark,
The little spark of laughter.
It bounced around a little,
Making the little girl happier.
The little spark became bigger,
And forced the little girl up.
The spark then bowed,
And into the pocket it jumped.
At once the little girl understood
She would not go down so easily.
She stood up once more,
Her power growing increasingly.
She stood up taller and jumped into the air.
She looked down upon the hellish Beast.
The magic floating through her hair.
Her clothes all fluttered,
Against the strong frozen wind.
The Beast resisted weakly,
And a smile crawled up from the little girl’s chin.
At this moment what would happen,
Was definitely a mystery.
But for all the little girl knew,
She would be making history.
Beast and the girl shot at each other,
Making a blaze of light.
They rose to be at the same level,
They rose to an extreme height.
You see now we’re here,
At the brink of society.
One little move,
Could bring down entirely
Everything we know.
From believing in magic,
To that strange computer glow.
The Beast was all things dark and grey,
And the little girl, A goddess now.
Was everything in night and day.
They both fight for what they want,
But they are both needed,
One must not be forgot.
Without evil in the world,
It would be too much of a happy place.
But with no magic in this world,
Who would have a smile on their face?
At that moment
Time seemed to freeze.
The little girl as strong as ever,
The Beast’s dark rage creating a breeze.
And then the little girl
Howled with all her power.
She threw her magic at the Beast,
And her magic began to devour.
The Beast was struggling against the light,
It clawed and screamed, with all its might.
The girl descended with the Beast
Until they touched the ground.
And then she had the Beast released,
Only a shadow; hell bound.
At once with the Beastie’s great defeat,
The world turned bright like a lantern.
The Beast reduced to nothing,
The world became much grander.
As everything turned colorful again
And all the creatures did come out,
The little girl walked up the Beastie,
For her soul wasn’t darkened that much, now.
She helped the Beastie onto its feet.
She warned the Beastie never to come back,
But to keep living in defeat.
She told him that without evil,
there would be nothing in this world.
And she sent him off with that one phrase,
She became more than a little girl.
She turned around to face her victory,
And in that moment she went down in history.
But as the day sky turned to night,
The little girl had noticed.
A star that hadn’t been there before,
A fire that burned like lotus.
The little girl looked at the star,
It’s reflection glowing in her eye.
The girl then reached to touch the star.
And it made her something that would never die.
One can still see this star,
And the little girl’s bright eyes.
If you look closely and believe,
She will dim your sad cries.
She looks upon the little children,
All over the world.
She guards the magic we must believe in,
She helps all our imaginations unfurl.
Every single person has a little spark
A little spark that helps us through the dark.
She guides us through
All the hardships we will face.
She is the reason there is still
Magic in this place.
