Teens and PTSD
9/2/18
Dear reader,
Would you like it if you or a loved one had a mental illness, but they couldn’t get the
helped they needed? Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental illness caused by
traumatic experiences or extreme stress. This condition is most commonly found in veterans.
However, anyone who has been through extreme stress can have this mental condition. PTSD
is a condition that needs to be taken more seriously because teens can have PTSD, and
parents who have PTSD can affect their kids lives.
One reason teens should be know the symptoms of PTSD is because they could have
it. Some may argue that it’s highly unlikely or even silly for a teen to have PTSD. However, as
stated in the article “PTSD”,“Any kind of extreme stress can lead to PTSD” (Teens Health).
Thus, anyone at any age can go through a traumatic experience and get PTSD. Furthermore
teens are going through changes mentally and physically. This means their minds can be
unstable and uneasy, which could make them more susceptible to conditions such as PTSD.
However PTSD can also affect parents of teens.
Parents of teens could have PTSD as well. Many parents got PTSD while serving
overseas in the military. This is due to them possibly seeing friends or comrades die right in
front of them, or it could be they had to kill people. When they return they may be distant or not
seem like themselves. As indicated by “Children of Parents of PTSD”,“Numbing symptoms are
when a parent is experiencing a traumatic memory and they space out or become distant for
awhile” (U.S Department of Veteran Affairs). When they return they be distant or not seem like
themselves. Furthermore, parents with PTSD could become mentally unstable or on edge,
leading to the parent being unintentionally abusive. When a parent has a mental illness they can
cease to function and ignore everything and everyone around them. It could make the teen feel
like they lost their parent. PTSD is horrid condition that affects both teen and parent.
PTSD is a mental condition caused by extreme stress or trauma. This condition is most
commonly found in veterans. However, anyone who has gone through extreme stress or
trauma can have this mental condition.r This condition needs to be taken more seriously
because it can affect teens, as well as parents who PTSD which can affect the teen. Many
families have been permanently scarred by PTSD. This is cause many people do not get the
help they need. If change would happen things would be different for everyone with this mental
condition. Teen and adult suicide rates would go down and people with this condition can live
their lives again. This condition has already taken many loved ones, don’t let your loved one be
next.
