The Real Tragedy of 2019
We are being taught to hate by a government that lacks proper morality. Spoonfed to us by the president and his colleagues, we are taught that immigrants, whether legal or not, especially of Latino or Hispanic heritage are criminals and leeches. We are told that people escaping poverty and crime are evil, that they are stealing resources from our elders, our veterans, and our precious Americans. However, what isn't reflected is that there were never enough resources to begin with, and immigrants have nothing to do with that. People claim they are the most patriotic, freedom-loving Americans, but are quick to deny the rights and freedoms of immigrants in the land of the poor, the hungry, and the needy. People are freezing to death on the border, waiting in line for asylum after weeks of travel, due to the blatant racism and xenophobia Donald Trump and his supporters express. In the past, people have been taught to hate others due to their race or ethnicity - does the Holocaust sound familiar? Although we see this as a tragedy we have learned from, the situation at the border and in America proves this is untrue. When we accept the hatred of a race by an elected official like Donald Trump, we accept oppression, racism, and injustice in our country, once again. Our country shows such hatred towards Hispanics, yet we love exploiting their culture - think how many Cinco de Mayo or Day of the Dead parties and happy hours you've been to. Racism is not a new thing in this country, but it is growing severely under the leadership of Donald J. Trump. Many of us forget that we all are immigrants on stolen land - and no human can be illegal or legal. We only make them illegal when we are prejudiced against those who don't look like us or don't speak the same language as us, and that is the real tragedy of 2019.
This article expresses how Donald J. Trump's presidency has negatively affected the views of immigrants, especially of Latino descent.
