The history of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
Why is it celebrated in May?
It is annually celebrated in May to highlight the history and the contributions of Asain Pactinct American communities. In 1900, Former President, George H.W. Bush signed a bill that was passed by Congress to extend the celebration of Asian-American Heritnate week into a month. 2 years later it was officially designated as Asain Pacific American Heritage Month.
It is celebrated in May to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843. A majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.
2022 Month Theme
The theme for Asain American Heritage Month is Advancing Leaders Through Collaboration. In 2021, Kamala Harris become the first Asian American Vice President of the United States. The acronym AAPI, Asain American and Pacific Islander. This has been recently used the Stop Asain American and Pacific Islander to raise awareness of the hate and violent acts that were being faced towards Asians.
When we talk about the AAPI community, we are referring to two large groups of people who bring a broad and rich diversity to our ranks. Many AAPI cultures form an important part of not only our history as a country but also our current DNA as a people.
