Social Media: The Positive Effect It Has on Us
“In twitter, there are 316 million monthly users and 5 million tweets sent per day. In Instagram 1,000 comments per second are posted, more than 5 million photos are uploaded every day.” In this generation, social media is everywhere. almost everyone has some sort of social media account. This is why social media has made such an impact on us. Social media has has affected us positively, educationaly, and worldwide.
Social media has improved the way we communicate because it has helped the quality of our writing. For instance, Simon Kuper from the article how social media improved writing talks about how social media is making writing “more conversational” this shows that social media is helping our writing. Also, Ethna Dempsey Lay, a assistant professor of writing study and composition from the article why cant Johnny write? don’t blame social media talks about how twitter is useful in class, and that it gives “[her] quietest students a moment to shine. proving that twitter can help the quality of our writing. Some might say that social media hurts the quality of our writing because they say that writing quality has gone down since social media has started. I disagree with this because in the same article, she also talks about how she found an article from 1986 that more than half of 17 year olds where “demonstrat[ing] unsatisfactory writing skills” this demonstrates that social media has not hurt our quality of writing. This is because we did not have social media in 1986, so this shows that social media is not the blame for our writing.
Social media has improved the way we communicate because it has helped us connect more easily. Seth Masket from don’t fear the network: the internet is changing the way we communicate for the better talks about how social media is not preventing face-to -face conversations, when it just “increases the overall frequency of communication” this is because people are still having the same amount of off-line communication. But really social media helps us connect more. In the info graphic how teens communicate it says that if their favorite social media platform disappeared.“18% feel that they would stop communicating altogether” This shows that social media helps us connect more. Although some say that social media has made communication harder, in the same info graphic it states that if their favorite social media platform disappeared “6% believe that they would write more letters, if there were no cell phones.” This shows that without social media it would be harder to connect, this is because letters are slower and harder to communicate with than social media.
Social media improves the way we communicate globally. For example, in the article I knew you before I met you: how social media has changed the way we communicate Jennifer Cox says that social media caused political revolutions in other countries. She talks about how they spread messages and protests that “toppled the governments in those countries” This shows that even though we live in different countries, social media has helped us connect to people around the world, that normally we wouldn’t be able to do. In the same article Jennifer also talks about the story of “batkid” she talks about a 5 year old cancer survivor that wanted to meet batman , social media caused 12,000 people to “transform San Francisco into Gotham City for a day” On top of all of this, this event was shared on social media in 117 countries. This demonstrates that social media has had a positive effect on us globally.
Social media is a big part of our society. It has helped us communicate more effectively in education ways especially through twitter to give them moments to shine. Also worldwide, to bring together people to make a difference. This is why social media is important in the way we communicate and has been and continues to be a positive and effective way of communication.
