Gay Marriage
Imagine living in a world where you weren’t allowed to show affection with the person you love or get married because society tells you that what you’re feeling is wrong. The reasons why gay marriage should be allowed are endless. The reasons go from human rights to mental help. Gay marriage should be legal in all states because everyone deserves to marry the person they love.
Marriage itself is a right that everyone has and has been done for thousands of years. Marrying young as 25 can increase the rate of divorce in couples. The area that has the least amount of marriages being done in the U.S is Washington D.C. 60% of partners in marriages have admitted to having a relationship outside of their marriage. One of the earliest record of a homosexual marriage occurred long ago in Ancient Rome and seemed to not be objected or thought much about until Christianity came and changed views.
When we deny gay marriage, we don’t give gay couples the same benefits as straight couples. The American Psychological Association, American Psychiatric Association and others wrote in a September, 2007 amicus brief, “allowing same-sex couples to marry would give them access to the social support that already facilitates and strengthens heterosexual marriages, with all of the psychological and physical health benefits associated with that support”. Gay couples would be given the same marital rights just like the straight couples. They would have the same exact help and protection just like straight couples do. It eliminates the psychological problems that gay people have because they have to hide who they are People all over the U.S are being denied marrying who they love just because of their sexuality in which they were born with and cannot change is wrong.
Our country was built on equality and denying gay marriage would go against it. One of the arguments for rejecting gay marriage is that religion all over the world considered gay love as a sin but our Amendments says a person’s religious views or lack should be protected no matter who they are. Our country was built on that the everyone’s rights should be protected no matter if their a majority or a minority. Even the White House’s website even puts the same-sex marriage among other civil rights we had to fight for including minorities rights, disabled people’s rights and more. “We have joined together to recognize equality for racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, marriages(legalizing gay marriage) is the right thing to do and it is time” said Christine Gregoire, former Washington Governor in January, 2012.
Being discriminated against because of who you love is wrong. Taking the restriction out of gay couples getting married removes the discrimination that the gay couples have each day. Allowing gay marriages show that gays and lesbian couples are the same as straight couples because it involves two people who love each other. Many places refuses to serve to gay couples which go against all our laws and amendments. Jennie McCarthy and Melissa Ervin filed a complaint against New York’s liberty ridge for refusing to let them host their wedding just because they're gay.
Gay couples would make good parents just like heterosexual parents. Since gay couples can’t have kids naturally, this will increase the desire to adopt. A study in June 2014 by University of Melbourne showed that kids with same-sex parents score better than kids with opposite-sex parents by 6% on general health and family cohesion. On June 7, 2010, it was released by Pediatrics that children with lesbian moms were better in social skills, academic skills and had less social problems. A published study in June, 2010 by pediatrics showed that children that had gay fathers were as fitted to the family as kids who were adopted by straight
Now some believe that legalizing gay marriage would lead to legalizing other non-traditional marriages. Interracial marriages were illegal in the past since it wasn’t a “traditional” marriage but things have changed. We have fought for other non-traditional things like women's rights, minorities rights, and more. Gay marriage isn’t a traditional marriage considering the couples can’t conceive kids without help from science and allowing gay marriage would eventually change what is “traditional”.
Denying gay marriage is a complete violation of our country’s foundation. Gay marriage should be legal in all states because everyone deserves to marry who they love. Think about gay marriage without a bias and we will all see that gay marriage and straight marriage both involve one thing; Love.
