Life on the High Road
Taking the high road and having a little sense of humor as well as letting things roll off your back, can help you with living a full life.
Letting people mistreat and hurt you can cause emotional damage. My mom always told me “If they aren’t paying your bills, their opinion doesn’t matter.” For fourteen years I’ve lived my life like this and have had no bullies. People feel empowered when bullying and making others feel bad. Most people want a drama-free happy daily life. When people are pushed to the limit they begin cutting and that may lead to suicides. Suicides are selfish but are also emotional.
A way to handle a situation when you know your friend is inflicting pain on himself or herself is to tell someone. This will alleviate the pressure of you feeling guilty that they took their own life. Killing yourself, no matter what the situation makes you selfish and thoughtless to those who do care about you. Destructive behavior may seem cool, but really it is just an ugly fate that you decided to take on. Many life challenges can put a toll on your body and make you feel the need to cut or end your life … but really you don’t have to put yourself through all this torture and pain. Is pain really the answer? Never forget that someone will always be there for you in times of need and in times of pain.
Destructive behavior can happen at anytime of your life but it is most common to happen to young adults when they go through bullying, stress, and sometimes when you lose a family member, or any saddening event that will make you feel upset and want to kill yourself. The reason this is so prevalent in young adults, is because young adults are not sure of who they are and what the outcomes become when they start cutting, everyone will look at them differently. They will get stared down and will get awful looks, do you really want this? The real answer is no, because who wants to be known as the girl or boy that cuts for a stupid reason.
My friend was bullied once; she was teased for her independent style and life style. She chose not to act and do as the others. She handled it with letting her trusted acquaintances know about her story. The bullying got worse, she thought everyone hated her so she took the situation and made it worse for herself, she started cutting. After she started cutting she got really suicidal and it scared us all. We told her parent and she was upset with us for doing so but what we did might have saved her life. Any aggressive behavior, resulting in conflict between two or more people describes bullying. Bullying affects many people and cannot only cause physical damage.
When life gets hard and bullying occurs just take the highroad and by pass all the pain and torture you may experience. Remember that their opinions don’t matter and there is always someone there for you when you need them. If you cannot talk to your parent you can always talk to a close friend who is willing to help you. As for the self-harm, find a better outlet, and the risky stupid business you do when you are young will affect your future. You are only one person, so don’t try to do too much because that can put a heavy stress on your body and can make you feel like you want to go, Don’t do it!

This was a group writing piece with my best friend, Morgan. We didnt know what to write because we got writters block on the other topics we tried and then she said something about the highroad and it went from there. This piece was one that was touchy to write about, but we both felt like we were doing our part and maybe stopping someone from making that first cut, making many more non erasable lines or just down right ending their life. I hope this article saves people from being stupid and not thinking that their are other choices. - Emma and Morgan
