The feeling of finding that perfect someone, how they draw you in, and how they inhabit your mind, being the one you think about. The way they move, the way they speak, the smile on their face, all of it makes “The Perfect Girl” for you. The song “The Perfect Girl” by Mareux is a darkwave remix of the song “The Perfect Girl” by The Cure, which is a pop-rock love song. “The Perfect Girl” really breathes new life into an old song but does not remove the spirit of romance that the original song possessed. The song is about a man’s feelings for a girl whom he finds strange and mysterious, with the lyrics being the same as the original song, but carrying a dark, but romantic melody. It feels like the world is still in this one moment, and you see that someone, in the lamplight, is the perfect one for you. The beat of your heart is the percussion, feelings flashing through your head are the instrumentals, and your clearest thoughts are the lyrics. The remix was released in 2019 but would gain huge traction in a very short period with it being a huge part of the internet culture during the mass quarantines in the early 2020s, being a prominent part of edits of various characters from all sorts of media to glorify the characters, mainly Patrick Bateman from American Psycho, similarly to “Little Dark Age” by MGMT being used in edits.  The remix has taken over the name of “The Perfect Girl”, similar to Hurt by Johnny Cash, where the remix had become a more successful heir to the throne of the original song. The song even influenced a large darkwave influx on the internet as more and more darkwave songs were used similarly. “The Perfect Girl” is a song that remains popular in today’s culture as it holds an honored status in modern society, becoming a future classic. The song has reached over 364,000,000 listens on Spotify as of February 29th, 2024, which is more than the population of the United States. This cult classic remix has received many remixes of its own, with different genres and subgenres from retro wave, to darkwave-rock fusion. ¨The Perfect Girl¨ will continue to hold the throne in the subgenre of darkwave, as its influence and popularity only continue to rise. The song is a fantastic sampler for those getting into darkwave, or it can even be enjoyed without being into darkwave.

I chose to review “The Perfect Girl” because it was a song that had a profound effect on me. It described and encompassed so many feelings that had been building up during quarantine. To start writing, I first did my research. The research went into the genre and the culture surrounding the song. I had first-hand experience with this too as I had once been a part of the community and culture that this song was a huge part of. The research made the objective facts put into the review quite easy, as I had already known a lot of the stuff behind the song. What gave me a mental challenge was the subjective stuff because I have to appeal to feelings, whereas I normally prefer to appeal to logic instead, so I had to feel about my words instead of thinking about them. In terms of support, it was just pointers as to what I should do with the excessive amounts of objective information, adding more subjective ideas, and better transitioning the subject matter. Overall, it was a nice experience to write a professional-ish review.
