Is the Dress Code Unfair?

Let's talk. Let's talk about how unfair dress codes are. Dress codes are formed around creating a very "focused" environment; but have you ever thought about how stopping a class, pulling a student from the room, or even just pointing out how someones shorts aren't "finger-tipped length" can ruin that day of learning.

For those of you that don't know, a dress code is a set of rules, often written, with regards to clothing.

Dress codes are created out of social perceptions and norms and vary based on purpose, circumstances and occasions and many of them are unfair. Dress codes are meant to create safe, positive learning environments in schools, but too many of them have the opposite effect, shaming students, robbing them of instructional time, and disproportionately targeting female students and students of color.

The good news is that some schools are stepping up to fix the problem, updating their dress codes to make them more reasonable and equitable.

My hope is that your school will be next in line.
