Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than hands?

-Ernest Gaines.

I find myself at somewhat of a disadvantage...
-------
I wake up to find a world filled with mirrors that tower above the terrain.
A strange place where things aren’t what they seem.
Everything is dead and gone.
The landscape charred and barren.
To the human eye everything seems to be gone.
But to look into the mirrors that surround this place, shows the truth…

Shining buildings reach up into the clouds.
Birds sing in trees of flowering blooms.
Plains filled with grasses of emerald.
The people seen are not dead, but living…

But when you look away, the world slips back to its normal state.
The death and decay come back.
These mirrors do not reflect how the world around them is.
They show only what it once was or is yet to become.
-------
Skeletons litter the bases of these large mirrors.
People who have come before and seen the blackness.
They have wasted away in front of these ghostly frames.
Those who have looked to these glistening structures, looking to run away from the corruption
Seeking only what they show, wishing to escape into their crystalline depths.
To escape from the crumbling ruins of the world surrounding them.
-------
These mirrors were put here for purposes unknown.
Crafted possibly before time itself by beings who remain nameless.
They were seen as sculptures of beauty, objects meant to be admired.
They were placed at the outskirts of this once-great city by the elders.
Beacons of hope for the populace, or so they thought…
-------
No one knows the history of this place.
All we know is that the mirrors are still standing.
The visions seen are merely echoes of the past.
The images have not yet caught up to the time.
All that once was, is now trapped in these all-seeing mirrors…
-------
The next time you go to sleep, beware.
If you wake in front of a large mirror, do not look into it, for you may find yourself unable to
stop.
Try hard to resist the temptation or risk wasting away in front of the crystal-clear depths.
Who knows.
You might not wake up…
