My Own Kin
I hear the gun go “POW!”
I fall to the ground
Mud and tears flowing through my eyes
I’m a stubborn girl, so this comes as a surprise
Crawling under the desk
My heart is beating 10 miles an hour in my chest
I look up for 5 seconds max
I gag, and I hear a CRACK
The quiet girl who sat beside me in class,
Shivers and whimpers beside the broken shards of glass
The guy I once known as my best friend
Is now the enemy, the fiend.
I rise up in determination
Knowing that I am God’s creation
He looks at me with wide eyes, shaking his head NO,
Like he doesn’t want to pull the trigger, doesn’t want me to GO
We stand there, staring at each other
Remembering that we’re siblings, we love each other
