Bells
I can hear the bells.
They played out as I held your gaze,
Announcing your entry into my life
That you changed on that very day.
I live to see your smile.
It fills me with billions of brilliant rays
That reflect so brightly into your eyes,
Making them gleam like stars lit ablaze.
I cry during our farewells.
Our lives combined is where my heart lays.
Now you leave and my heart cannot rise;
It hurts so deep when my mind twists in a maze.
I still hear the bells.
They ring out to me in so many different ways,
Bringing back my life when part of me tries to die.
Lighting things with color when there are only greys.
I yearn to see your smile.
The tricks of the sun to my eyes it plays,
Showing me lights that left when we said goodbye.
When it sees how I turn a blind eye, it prays.
I’ve been invited to say my final farewell.
I lift my hands up to the sky in false praise.
My heart floods with tears that I cannot seem to cry.
I leave after a while, but with you, my soul stays.
I once heard the bells.
They called to me on that blessed day.
They brought me the person that made me try.
They stirred away that nasty haze.
I always remembered your smile.
I kept it inside so no one could take it away.
I held onto it close because I knew it could fly.
I couldn’t forget you so I urged this part to stay.
It’s your turn to say farewell.
My life gave way one day as I laid by your grave.
I had been watching you flit around in the sky so high,
Then I felt death upon me and with my last breath, I told the world, “I’ve been saved.”

This was inspired by the movie "I Heard The Bells" and the poetry of Henry Longfellow. It holds an undercurrent of love, loss, and peace.
