The Locket
I saw her fist step,
All clumsy and new.
Saw her read, saw her write,
Her first trip to the zoo.
I went with her,
On her first day of school,
‘Till the day she dropped out,
‘Coz it made her look ‘cool’.
I was with her through jobs,
When she moved out of home.
When she went back to school,
Her gap year trip to Rome.
And when she got married,
She wore me with pride.
Then we sat on the beach,
With the incoming tide.
And now that she’s gone,
She’s given me away,
To her little great-granddaughter,
Just born in May.
So next time you’re out,
Make sure to check,
For a cute little girl,
With a heart pendant ‘round her neck.
