Cold Cuts MAG
Worn out high school yearbooks
with yellow pages
falling
from loose brown binding glue
Perhaps a saved notebook
Its spiral wire sticking out
at a threatening angle
"Matt was here in '94"
and
"j.b. loves d.h."
A reunion at the supermarket
Frozen food
and packaged meat
And the deli man slices
Roast Beef
Your hair is streaked
Silver strands replace blonde
and your blue eyes are no longer
so bright
when you scold
a nagging five-year-old
who looks like you did
at five
You stare at my crisp brown suit
and imagine where I packed away
my sandals
and t-shirts
and the long brown hair
I used to love
And so I wonder
is this what it comes to?
"Oh yeah, I remember him,"
and "When I was in high school"?
Naaah ...
That couldn't happen
At least,
not in the frozen food department.
