It Only Took One Shot
I hear the soft shuffling footsteps
And the muffled sobs above
The quiet noises piercing my cold ears
My hard eyes see the rows of dark chairs
The brightly-colored flowers
All weighing heavily upon my chest
And then, four long nights ago
The moonlight savagely cutting into the old house
Steps treading lightly down the hall at first, then becoming more desperate
A door screaming open
Frantically fighting the force of the familiar intruder
It only took one shot
Scarlet rained down, dripping
A mess on the thick sheets
Now I’m left
Clawing frantically to reach the surface above
Blood sliding down my blue-tinged wrists
Bone crunching, snapping
Unable to overcome the darkness
My empty eyes switch to him now
Carefully counting each corner of his fresh green bills
Standing, of course,
Over my dead body
