In the Desert, Far From Home
Sweltering sun, and I know I'm there
That beautiful place with the humid air
The desert has no limits, it has no end
Its stunning beauty is my friend
Zipping down the highway, far from Phoenix
My head is spinning, my heart doing a helix
The craggy cliffs jut from the ground
My aunt's car radio is the only sound
Past small towns and soldier saguaros
To my grandmother is the way the car goes
She lives in a small town forgotten by the rest
For me, it's always in my memories, one of the best
The blue sky contrasts with the orange land
I can't see the critters in the dirt and sand
But I know they're there, this is their home
Even when I'm so far from my own
All is quiet except for the wheels
We stop occasionally for breaks and meals
As I wipe sugary ice cream from my cheeks
All I can think of is my beautiful week
