The Mirror Mountain
The Mirror Mountain and the Great Green Sea
Over the lake, on the crest of the horizon
A field of pine trees, evergreens of all heights.
They seem to flow like a sea, left to right, so many shades of green.
The mist that rises from the placid lake
Stems over the flow of trees, as a river over rocks,
Showering the air with cold rapid-steam.
Behind the flowing evergreens a snowcapped mountain rises
A chiseled gemstone of rugged earth, washing its feet in the great green sea,
And in the mirror it sees itself, a perfect image in the water.
It’s hard to tell which end is up, which picture is real;
A mountain above and reflection below,
Divided in half by an evergreen sea.
