Manifest Destiny
Knock knock, where did we go?
The lights are on but nobody’s home
Through exhausted eyes we listless gaze
Tying not to say the things we mean
Thoughts collide and words betray
With insincerity every syllable rings
If I fell inside a forest, would it make a sound?
There doesn’t seem to be anyone else around
With nothing to offer except our own confusion
In these abandoned halls where we silent lay
Asking ourselves questions that have no solutions
Drowning in feelings that have no names
On our knees saying prayers to an empty sky
Science damned our souls and religion our minds
We are forming words, but we do not speak
They are scanning our faces for signs of life
Our eyes are open but we cannot see
We’re breathing but we aren’t alive
