Beach in Winter
It was a clean break you felt in your heart
while hypnotized by the gray morning Atlantic.
Sitting in that old, battered lifeguard’s chair
with the blue paint peeling in the salt wind,
you let go, just like I said you would someday.
Finally, finally.
Tears came around you, like easy summer rain.
Huddled against the cold and this newfound self,
you wondered if this is what it felt like
to be free.
