The Sands of Time
With a clink on the glass fell the grain
till no more sand was wont to drain
it filled the upright hourglass
and then became a gold crystal mass.
I sat and watched the sand nourished
the unforgiving minute, which had already perished
and before all grains passed through the funnel,
my mind was outpacing the past tunnel.
I stepped into my past life, felt nothing but regret
much as I tried, it was a feeling I couldn't reject
and where I am and stand today is because of that one folly
of whose memory still pierces me, like the evergreen holly.
I walked on the sandy path
I faced only hate, all of my wrath,
but the thought of vengeance is perishing
with the past gone and the present diminishing!
My footprints washed away on the sandy beach
my hand groped for the horizon I could not reach
murky grey waves of sorrow swelled and crashed
leaving me panting, gasping, and gashed.
And even today I remember my crime
my sole reason for composing this rhyme
because every time I go back to the clock-chime,
back to The Sands of Time.
