Possibility: a Sestina
You tell me about a dream
you had last night in which you
were trying to find me
under the covers –
There was love
and laughter in the air.
Fading into the air,
that wistful dream
invokes something like love.
You’re staring at me.
I shyly cover
my eyes to you.
I can tell that you want me
to throw some words in the air
so I gather my thoughts and cover
how I feel about this dream:
I want to be with you
too, for this kind of love.
The stark truth that love
shakes from me
doesn’t shock you –
possibility hangs in the air
like a lucid dream
we’d both like to discover.
Slowly, you cover
my hand with yours. I love
when you do these dreamlike
gestures just to see me
smile. Birds float through the air–
I think they sing for you.
I gaze at you,
smooth down my covers.
There’s something in the air –
something like love,
or some words from me,
or maybe a lucid dream.
You and your love
cover my heart and me
with the air of a dream.
