Plain and Simple (except not really)
I live in the United States, where everyone is supposed to have equal rights,
except DC isn’t a state and the licence plates read taxation without representation.
I’m an American citizen and don’t need a visa to live here,
except I have an Italian passport and can travel throughout the EU.
I’ve lived in DC my whole life where the official language is English,
except I speak Spanish fluently and knew how to spell “agua” before “water”.
I live in the capital, full of monuments and tall buildings
except I’m surrounded by trees and know the woods better than the streets.
I can count to ten in English given that its my mother tongue,
except I can also do it in Chinese and four other languages as well.
I have lived in the States my whole life and learned to write at an American school,
except I spell colour with a “u” and favourite and neighbour as well.
I think all of this is normal, after all it’s the way I’ve grown up,
except maybe it isn’t so normal.
I am me, plain and simple,
except not really.
