Ode to a Sailor
Around the world or out at sea,
I’ll never forget how mean you were to me.
You called me names and pushed me down.
Things got worse when mom and dad weren’t around.
I made fun of you for how you ran,
But you always made sure I knew you had the upper hand.
You’ve grown up, you’ve matured, youre a brand new guy.
You just sent home some of your things. Power Rangers? Why…
So maybe that little kid is still inside you somewhere.
You get to be stationed in San Diego? That isn’t fair.
Thanks to the navy, you can keep your hair buzzed.
I know you always liked having that 1/8 inch fuzz.
Dress blues, whites, camos, and peanut butters galore.
Things are different since you aren’t home anymore.
The house is more quiet, there’s more food to be fed.
Now I’m the one who has to get things out of the shed.
Sure, we fought. That’s what siblings do.
Blood is thicker than water, but we’re more like glue.
Three thousand miles away, youre on the other side of the country.
Youre this big bad sailor to them, but a dorky big brother to me.
No matter how many people thank you for serving, this one thing is true;
None of them will look up to you the way that I do.
