He Shot the Elephant
He shot out innocence with a cascade of unnecessary bullets and fire.
But he didn’t have to,
No, he didn’t have to.
He could have simply retired!
Oh, no, but he couldn’t have done that.
No, the crowd would have looked down upon him more and just spat.
Spat in disgust,
Spat because they would have lost their “bit of fun.”
He killed that once living elephant.
He emptied his cartridges to show them that he could do it.
He did it for the slightest hope of escaping his pit.
He had to do what was expected of him.
They came for a kill,
Grinning for the assault.
They came for a thrill,
And he could do nothing more than exalt.
